Oakland, New Jersey is a city located in the New York metropolitan area. It is the county seat of Essex County and has a population of over 232,000. The name Oakland comes from two different places: Ockennan and Hokennan. The first was a Native American word meaning "place of refuge." The second was derived from the French word ossature meaning "edge" or "backward slope." In 1856, when Oakland became an incorporated municipality, it had a population of only 12 people. By 1870, it had grown to over 100 people and by 1900 it had reached its present size. In 1907, Oakland became one of the cities that joined New York City as part of the newly created Metropolitan Borough of Manhattan. As part of this change in policy, all municipal boundaries within Manhattan were redrawn so that they included all but three wards in Brooklyn (the exceptions being South Beach and Sheepshead Bay). This left Oakland without any wards and with a population of just under 50 people. However, due to its location within the new borough, Oakland saw some significant growth during World War II. Due to rapid population growth throughout much of post-war America - especially after Roosevelt declared war on Japan - Oakland's economic development was markedly faster than most other municipalities around the country. In 1945, it had a population of 198 people; by 1951 it had reached 476 people and in 1965 it reached 618 people - all while remaining within commuting range for NY City residents! All these totals pale into insignificance when compared to what happened in 1955 when Berkeley became an official city withinNYC despite having no vote or representation at any level! During World War IIOakland played an important role as both an industrial center for munition production and as headquarters for occupation forces stationed in North America. By 1900 the population of both cities had surpassed 10,000 residents; however growth slowed after World War I due to prohibitionism that swept across America at that time. During World War II many Japanese Americans were interned by U.S. military authorities in concentration camps located throughout eastern Pennsylvania and northwestern New York after being taken into custody during the bombing raids over Japan on December 7th 1941 (thebombingof Pearl Harbor). Many Japanese Americans who lived in Oakland were rounded up along with other citizens deemed disloyal to the United States government because they could speak Japanese or because they bore features typical of East Asians such as large eyes and long hair without having undergone significant transformation – characteristics often used to identify Japansis living within white society at that time In 1945 redevelopment began for downtown Oakland following years of planning led by Mayor George Brownlock - one of few African American mayors nationally during this period - with funding provided by then Governor Thomas Ewing Jr..
