Oakland was formed on November 2, 1847 from portions of Caldwell and Uniontown Township. The name "Oakland" is thought to be derived from the oak tree that grew in abundance near the town site. The first settler in what would become Oakland was Ebenezer Eaton who arrived on July 10, 1795. In 1814 Samuel Tilden purchased land at what is now Oakwood and built a house there which still stands today as part of the Tilden Museum complex. On February 25, 1836 John Fenton became the first white person to occupy what would become downtown Oakland when he erected a fence around his farmstead at Fourth and Market Streets. There are several stories about how this happened: One version has it that Fenton saw an American flag flying high and decided to make himself felt like a member of society by erecting a sign reading "Free Soil & Free People." Another story has it that Fenton's brother-in-law got him some land east of Center Avenue for farming purposes only to find out later that there were no trees or crops left standing after winter rains caused floods upstream which destroyed most of their acreage. In any case, within weeks or so Fenton had erected a fence around his land holdings and began calling them "Fentonville" (now part of Chinatown). In 1851 Albion Potter became mayoralty with Jno Hennigan taking over as acting mayor following Abel Ferrara's resignation because he had been accused of bribery by then-mayor Robert Morris. Hennigan helped improve infrastructure in Newark while running for reelection against incumbent Jacob Riis; however Riis won easily despite receiving $1 million more in campaign contributions from Edison brothers George and Charles Drexel than Hennigan did. A year later Hennigan died suddenly at age 54 after serving as mayor for six years; his son John took over as mayoralty until 1905 when he succeeded his father also named John Hennigan Jr.. After World War I many small businesses closed down due to lack of demand; however starting in the 1920s new factories started up throughout North America thanks to migration from Europe including many Swiss companies such as Bernese Alps Chocolate Company and Alcoa Aluminum Company (now aluminum giantAlcoa). This period also saw heavy growth in upper class white flight due mainly to rising prices for foodstuffs during World War II which drove much lower class residents out into neighboring townships where they could afford better housing without fear of being displaced again or becoming refugees themselves like so many African Americans had done before them during wartime shortages elsewhere in America southward along Interstate 95/I-280 called "The Great Migration". During the 1960s growing crime rates ledto redevelopment projects such as The City Limits project spearheaded by city planner Edward Kelly which involved building large homes alongside shopping malls opposite police stations with private security patrolsmanaging access but providing social services such as free health care clinics within walking distance for low income residents
