In 1868, gold seekers discovered gold near Lake Merritt and began mining hills northeast of downtown Oakland; this led to growth in northwest Oakland along Telegraph Avenue between Elma Street and University Avenue becoming known as Gold Hill due to their high concentration of gold ore veins thereabouts. This growth continued until 1906 when rapid street construction destroyed much valuable oldgrowth oak forest east of Telegraph Avenue making way for new housing developments that continue down that street to this day including Jackfruit Jungle restaurant popular among students at UC Berkeley (now located at 24th Street and University Avenue). during World War II many naval personnel were stationed at Stockton Naval Shipyard on San Francisco Bay area docks while shipbuilding activity increased around larger yards such as Bethlehem Steel on 11th Ave., Fremont Yard on MacArthur Boulevard north of Interstate 80 entrance off Hwy 101E & I-280 exit ramps), Kaiser Aluminum works site just south off Rte 19A about 5 miles east 3rd St SW only about 12 miles out from Golden Gate Bridge

The name "Oakland" probably comes from two variants: either Oyster Bay or Ocean Beach due to its location just upstream from both bodies of water mentioned in early references to it: Oyster Bay Creek and Hackensack River..
