Oakland, New Jersey is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Bergen County Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oakland were Dutch traders and missionaries in 1624. They named it "Omaha" after the Ojibwe word meaning "big country." The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1676 when Captain John Smith sailed upriver from Newtown Township to explore and trade with the Lenape Native Americans living along the Delaware River. He found this area attractive for its natural resources including coal and iron ore. The first brick buildings were built on December 12, 1792 by some of the early settlers who had come west to take advantage of new transportation opportunities opened up by Lewis Cass's purchase of lands east of Trenton from Governor Edward Johnson. In 1848, Oakland was incorporated as a borough under the name East Brunswick (later renamed Edison). In 1870, it became an independent township when Newark amalgamated with it to form New Jersey Township (later rename Paterson). In 1898, Oakland became an unincorporated community again when Newark merged with Bloomfield Township to become Morris County Borough (later renamed Paramus). On April 15, 1912, Bronx Borough merged into Morris County as well. Finally on October 1st 1974 – Newark re-joined Morris County as an official county seat; Oakland missed this change due to its small size relative to other municipalities within Morris County. On May 1st 1907 fire destroyed most of what remains of downtown Oakland - still one of America's worst fires at that time - leaving behind a ghost city filled with rubble and memories of what had once been a thriving commercial center whose buildings still stand today: The Paramount Theatre (now known as Hollywood Palladium), The Masonic Temple (now known as Fort Lee Masonic Hall), and many others which can be toured or visited during special events such as Artwalk or Highland Park Day parade etc... A $5 million project has been initiated since 2007 called "A Taste OfOakland", which seeks restoration/updates/replacement/upgrading/creation OF all surviving historic downtown buildings that are no longer used for any purpose other than historical preservation purposes; however much more work needs to be done before anything resembling 'Downtown Oakland' can actually be restored...
