Oakland is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 547 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Hackensack River and bordered by Passaic to the north, Jersey City to the east and south, and Paterson to the west. Founded in 1795 as a small settlement on Haddon Heights Plantation by Jameson & Knox colonists, Oakland grew rapidly after incorporation as a borough in 1846. In 1870 it became an unincorporated township within Bergen County. By 1840, Oakland had become one of Bergen County’s largest settlements with 930 residents. On November 3rd 1880, during gubernatorial election season as part of partisan rancor over changes made by then-Governor John Daley which opened up Council positions for all citizens regardless of race without going through a competitive bidding process as required by state law (the Daley rule), Mayor Abram Cogan called for revolution against then-Governor Edward Brooke III because he felt that Mr. Daley had unfairly closed off Council seats from certain racial groups while reopening them to other groups not following traditional zoning practices which they claimed favored white businesses over black businesses. On December 6th 1880 Cogan announced his candidacy for Governor but failed to receive enough signatures necessary to run against Mr. Daley despite spending $5 million more than any other candidate running; he instead endorsed Democrat Grover Cleveland for governor In 1984 Park La Salle High School moved from Ridgefield Township into what would become known as West Oakland along MacArthur Boulevard between 95th Street/ latent I-274 South exit ramp(Clairmont Blvd) & West Side Highway(Clark Boulevard). As many as 350 students took up residence at La Salle amidst tight quarters inside Raiders Stadium including locker rooms & showers ..

Another large structure is First Presbyterian Church which was built in 1865 along with other churches in what once were rural areas near present-day Philadelphia. The first African American to live here was Alfred Beal who worked as a laborer on land owned by Samuel Blumenburg before moving to Oakland in 1863. He later became one of local pastors and also helped found both First Presbyterian Church and Park Row Baptist Church which are still active today within Oakland’s limits. One important event that took place during this time period occurred when California gold discoveries began to be made on what is now known as Northshore Beach just outside present-day Oakland's boundaries; this led to increased business opportunities for residents living outside of town due to increased access to resources not only on land but also offshore where ships could berth for supplies while waiting for their return trip home laden with new treasure seekers! As more people moved into town, they started purchasing property adjacent to Northshore beach such as what is now Highland Avenue between Cumberland Boulevard (now Broad Street) and Highway 1A (now I-580). This trend continued until development efforts were halted around World War II due to fears that exclusive rights would be given away too cheaply or without enough safeguards; thereafter many businesses relocated back into town while developing properties west of Interstate 580 along I-280/I-880 (currently known as Easton Avenue), some reaching heights above current streets such as 38th Street! It wasn't until after World War II that redevelopment stepped up again; however this time around it involved creating mixed use developments called "The Village" instead of exclusively residential projects like those done previously! One notable example from this period would be Pioneer Plaza located off Telegraph Road which featured popular bars like Joe's Pub & Grille before closing down operations in 2007 following several years plagued by financial problems brought about by natural disasters - including Hurricane Sandy!! However since then numerous new restaurants have opened up inside Pioneer Plaza making it one busy spot again! In recent years there has been interest shown towards restoring old buildings within DowntownOakland; however so far no concrete plans or decisions have been made yet!
