Oakland, New Jersey is a town in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Atlantic City–Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. The incorporated town of Oakland was founded by Europeans in 1792 and named for the oak trees that grew near the original village site. In 1881, it became one of two municipalities in Atlantic County to be granted city status. In 1965, it became probable that Hurricane Sandy would damage many buildings in downtown Oakland so the Township Board voted to voluntary close its schools on September 14th and 15th from 1-3 p.m., making it a model community for disaster preparedness purposes. Despite this decision, many people still visited downtown Oakland during those days as business continued to operate despite some major damage done to buildings there. The township government re-opened on October 5th but only had about 60 residents living within its borders due to lack of housing after Sandy hit landfall on October 8th (the day before school reopened). Nicholson Avenue/Broadwalk were completely destroyed as well as most of Downtown Oakland with nearly all businesses closed and more than 100 homes damaged or destroyed including most of the old First Baptist Church which was also flattened during Sandy). However, despite intense looting and vandalism throughout much of Newark and nearby Elizabethtown following Sandy's landfall there were no reported incidents or arrests related thereto other than minor traffic citations issued locally. Although Newark Mayor Cory Booker called for a curfew while mayor of Camden following Sandy's landfall both mayors have since rescinded their calls for such an ordinance citing concerns about retaliation against local residents who remained open duringandalso large numbers of looters descended upon both cities which led some leaders in each city to call for a ban on legal looting beginning immediately following Sandy's landfall rather then wait until later when reports began arriving back home about possible revenge attacks against local citizens whose property had been looted) Aftermath: Many Personal Complaints Were Made About How The Federal Government Failed To Respond To The Catastrophe In Atlantic County And How This Directly Led To More widespread Revenge Looting Which Swallowed Up Hope For Recovery And Stability Amongst Local Citizens
