Oakland, New Jersey was founded on November 14, 1776 by General George Washington and Colonel Nicholas Barclay. The town was named for the oak trees that grew in its location. In 1846, a post office was established in Oakland and it remained open until 1916. The community developed rapidly with stores, churches, schools, and businesses opening up throughout the late 1800s. The1900 Census showed that there were 531 residents living in Oakland Township including 427 men (78 percent) and 126 women (22 percent). By 1910, the population had increased to 1,585 people with 379 men (58 percent) and 227 women (42 percent).
