Oakland is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,453 at the 2010 census. It takes its name from the Oakland tree that once graced the center of the township. The current settlement began as a farmstead on what is now the east side of village square in 1838. In 1851, it became part of Township 3 south of Newark and was incorporated as a borough on November 3, 1852. On May 13, 1898, it became an unincorporated community within township borders by itself when Township 1 merged with adjacent Borough Park to form a new municipality. The borough ceased to exist on October 14th, 1998 when all municipalities were dissolved by state law due to annexation by Paterson NJ. Oakland had two mayors before becoming an unincorporated community: Mathieu Garrido (1995-2001) and Fidel Ramos (2002-2003). Mayor Garrido left office after being indicted for bribery charges in 2001; he was later acquitted and returned to office in 2003 under Mayor Ramos' leadership. As of the 2010 census there are only three residents living in Oakland – one man and two women – who identify as Democrats or independents; all other residents affiliate with either major party affiliation or no political affiliation at all according to Census data. The first post office opened in 1838 as "Parsippany". It changed its name to "Oakland" on February 8th 1860 due to Lenape concern about competing claims for territory between Delaware Bay Colony (north), Monmouth County (south), and Catholic Church land grant territory ceded northward from New York during the American Revolution including parts of what is now Mercer County which included parts of Brooklyn also claimed by both Dutch Protestants westward along Long Island Sound while British settlers lived east along Hackensack River Valley until 1764 when they were forced out by their Native American allies Penacook Indians led by Chief Joseph Brant who built Fort Nassau overlooking present day Hackensack River Valley although some sources claim that Fort Nassau may have been built further upriver near present day West Orange where now Emerson Avenue stands
In 1849, Oakland was part of the Township of Camden. In 1873, it became a Borough and in 1898, it was incorporated as a city.
