On November 24th 1847 an act was passed by Congress designating Oakland Township as one section township comprising 4 square miles (10 km²). On May 12th 1848 an act was passed by Congress designating Ridgefield Township as one section township comprising 5 square miles (15 km²). On November 3rd 1865 President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 9478 authorizing construction on what are now Interstate 95/I-495 between Newark Liberty International Airport to the west and Edison Air Force Base to the east across Route 22 which would later become I-495; this action marked completion of Phase One – opened to traffic on October 1st 1966 – with portions open including downtown Oakland today

Oakland, New Jersey was named in 1776 for the Battle of Oakland Heights, fought between American forces and British troops. The town was first settled by Dutch Protestants in the area around what is now Newark and Morris counties in 1777. In 1824, it became part of the new United States of America. The town's population reached 10,000 by 1870 and its annexation by Jersey City in 1911 increased its size to 30,000. By 1960, it had shrunk to 12,500. It has since regained some of its former population with a growth rate of 1.5% from 2000 to 2010.
