Since the early 1800s, North Plainfield, NJ has been a center for gun manufacturing and trade. The town is located in Hunterdon County on the east bank of the Hackensack River, about 20 miles west of Philadelphia. In 1814, Nicholas-Jacques Conte founded a small gun company in North Plainfield that became known as Conte & Sons. By 1824, the company had become one of the largest firearms manufacturers in America. In 1853, George Hennepin created a town charter for North Plainfield and made it an official city. On December 1, 1854, North Plainfield voted to ban handguns and other weapons with metal detectors. The measure passed with a majority of votes cast. Mayor John Ahearn later announced that this was not a permanent decision and that handguns would be allowed again in two years’ time. The first handgun manufactured in North Plainfield was the .36 caliber Colt American Rifle (later model 1860) by Prentice Smith & Co., Incorporated. It entered service with the New Jersey National Guard on October 8th 1861 at Fort Hamilton near Perth Amboy NJ during the American Civil War. A number of handgun companies were established throughout New Jersey during this time including: Smith & Wesson Firearms Company (now part of Glock), Winchesters Armory Company (later part of Kimber), Fraternal Order Of Police Pistol Club No 3 holster manufacturer Charles Wohlhelm (now part of ICS Defense), and finally Winchester Arms Corporation which produced both revolvers and pistols under multiple brand names until its bankruptcy in 1903

North Plainfield is located on the eastern edge of Newark and its suburbs. The township was formed on April 12, 1837 from portions of Newark Township.
