North Plainfield, New Jersey is a town located in Sussex County, New Jersey on the southern edge of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, its population was 16,711. The name "north" comes from an ancient Native American word meaning "the land to the north." On May 25th, 1960 it became a township again when it merged with South Orange Township to form Hunterdon County. The north side of town has been home to many businesses such as PNC Bank (founded 1865), IBM (founded 1911), and Kodak (founded 1888). North Plainfield also hosted the headquarters for Star Broadcasting Corporation during its early years before moving to Harrisonburg Virginia in 1978. In recent years many large companies have relocated their operations out of county including Kellogg's Keebler Company (1957), Michelin tire company (1968), PGA Tour golf club Bedminster/Montgomery Golf Club (1983) as well as Comcast Xfinity TV service center which opened in 2006 outside Cape May Plaza mall which used to be part of nearby Edison Village until 2003 when that village closed down due to economic hardship while North Plainfield continued to thrive with its own Mall inside the older plaza building until 2007 when that building too closed down due to financial difficulties caused by Hurricane Sandy while much development took place around both malls creating another big anchor tenant since Comcast moved out). Most recently Google Fiber completed construction next door to Bedminster/Montgomery Golf Course where they had been planning all along but never actually built because local officials said they would rather see more jobs stay put within their owntownship instead than move into an adjacent municipality seeing as how Google fiber could bring new business downtown if done right whereas other large companies have decided against doing this type of expansion nears major cities like Camden or Philadelphia where there are already plenty of places that provide those services without having to leave your townhome!
