North Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 34,848. The name North Plainfield comes from English and Dutch settlers who arrived in 1692 and 1702 respectively. The area now comprising North Plainfield was first inhabited by Lenape Native Americans. In 1764, Captain John Stevens founded West Windsor Township in what is now Middlesex County because he believed that it would be more advantageous to settle near Philadelphia. In 1802, North Plainfield became part of Union Township when it was formed from parts of West Windsor and South Brunswick townships. The community developed around two schools – Academy School (now known as Princeton University Preparatory) and township trustees’ meeting house which still stands today on Route 9W between Sunrise Boulevard and White Plains Road. It was here that township meetings were held until 1870 when they were moved to the courthouse which had been built earlier in the year on land donated by Rufus King (the son of Sir George King). During World War II, North Plainfield played an important role in providing food for troops stationed in Europe through its production of dried fruits and vegetables called "chips." The post office at Academy School continued to serve residents until 1951 when it became part of Burlington Township. - According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. - As of the census taken 10/15/2010 there were 34 people, 12 households, and 7 families residing in the town. The population density was 1 person per square mile (0.39 km²). There were 13 housing units at an average density of 0 per square mile (0.28 km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96% Non-Hispanic white European American; 2% Black or African American; 2% Native American; 2% Asian; 1% from other races; 1% from two or more races; and 1% from five or more races

North Plainfield was a part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland from 1624 to 1776. The area now includes the town of North Plainfield and the borough of East Brunswick. The first people to live in what is now North Plainfield were Algonquians, who founded a village on Long Island Sound in 1624. In 1639, they moved their village upriver to what is now Northampton Township. In 1645, they established a permanent settlement at present-day East Brunswick. The Pattons were among the first Europeans to settle in what is today North Plainfield, coming from England in 1653. They built a prosperous farmstead and became one of the most influential families in New Netherland. In 1714, the proprietors of an extensive grant of land called "The Meadows" located along both sides of Passaic River formed into a company known as The Pattersons for Trade and Manufacturing purposes; it was through this company that North Plainfield achieved its early prominence as an agricultural center and also began developing its current commercial district. During World War II, many residents took up arms against Nazi Germany and aided Allied forces; some have even posthumously been awarded medals for their heroism. One resident, Josephine Heller, wrote her famous novel "The Great Gatsby" while living in North Plainfield during that period. After America's war victory over Japan came about, many Japanese Americans were relocated to other parts of New Jersey or choice internment camps scattered around America until 1948 when all Japanese Americans were finally targeted by Ulysses S. Grant's Executive Order 9066 and placed under curfew throughout much of New Jersey – including within sight (and audible) reach of our homes! This experience had lasting consequences on not just those individuals but also on generations later when difficult questions surrounding race/ethnicity continue to persist hereabouts today despite more than 50 years since that fateful day...
The area now known as North Plainfield was first settled by the Lenape people in the seventeenth century. The land that is now North Plainfield was part of what is now New Jersey. In 1732, English colonists founded a settlement on the site of present-day North Plainfield, and in 1738, they purchased additional land from the Lenape. The original town of North Plainfield incorporated in 1814.
