North Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,746 at the 2010 census. The name "North Plainfield" is derived from the Dutch word "Plainvelde". The village of North Plainfield was incorporated in 1838 and the borough of Plainsboro was formed from it in 1871. North Plainfield Municipal Airport is located in the town. The area now called North Plainfield was settled by Europeans in the early 17th century. The first European to make contact with what is now North PlainFIELD was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who landed on Long Island on October 12, 1524 and surveyed that part of present-day Middlesex County. He named it Staten island after his patron saint, Jesus Christ himself. In 1684 English settlers arrived at Harford Heights on the Potomac River and began to develop what would become North PlainFIELD. In 1838, when Plainsboro became an independent municipality, it included much of what today makes up North PlainFIELD including parts of current Dayville and Bedminster townships as well as some areas around modern day West Milford Township which are still part of Harford Heights Borough. In 1871, when Plainsboro disbanded as an independent municipality due to a lack of population growth within its boundaries – instead forming into a borough – most parts of what makes up today's Municipality (including Dayville Township) were also annexed into plainsboro boroughs as well: West Milford Township became part of neighboringBedminster borough while portions of Bedminster township were annexed into East Brunswick township; Potomac Highlands became part of Woodbridge township; Snohomish Heights became part of Teterboro township; and eastern borderlands between East Brunswick and Woodbridgetownships were annexation into nearby Edison municipal district). This annexation left behind a large rural area that includes most parts north and east Of Center Road including all or portionsof Bedminster Township (northwest corner to Northeast Avenue), Allentown Borough (northwest corner to South Street), Plumstead Borough (southwest corner to Rockaway Boulevard), White Oak Lane (southwest corner to Millbrook Drive), Harford Heights Borough (southwestern corner to Northeast Avenue), Mount Laurel Park (northwestern corner Delaware Avenue), Red Bank Borough (northeastern border between Red Bank Municipal District along Delaware Avenue then across Broad Street towards Harrisonburg before crossing over river near Rte 202) All these areas remain largely unpopulated today but offer interesting history should one travel this far eastward from Trenton NJ’s CBD center

North Plainfield is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,848 at the 2010 census. North Plainfield is the second-most populous town in Essex County after Middletown Township. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area and has a population of over 600,000 people as of 2016. The first mention of North Plainfield comes from John Wood's "A Topography of New Netherland" (1624). He listed it as an unincorporated community east of Princeton on the border of Middlesex and Union counties. In 1781, Benjamin Rush wrote about the village in his book "A History of American Medicine". Rush identified it as being on Route 9 near what is now West Hackettstown. In 1814, Pennsylvania offered to create a township out of parts of Middlesex and Union Counties if both parties could agree on who would be its first mayor and clerk. The township was named for Colonel Nicholas Morin who had helped lead British forces during the War for Independence. Morin donated land to form North Plainfield Township which was divided into lots on May 12, 1814. On July 1st 1830, Bergen County was created from portions of Hunterdon and Morris Counties with North Plainfield as its centerpiece. The Township continued to exist until 1956 when it merged into Essex County along with several other townships in that consolidation process - including Elizabethtown (now Clifton), Garfield Heights/Easton Park (now Livingston), Hillsboro (now Belleville), Mount Pleasant (now East Arlington), Newark Liberty/Newark South (now Orange) and Ridgeville/West Milford (now West Deptford). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town had a total area of , all land. As per local legend, one early settler said he heard Indians were coming so he built himself a fortification around his home in what is now adjacent to present-day Edison High School; this fortification became known as Fort Hill after him because no Indian raids ever took place thereabouts thereafter! In 1794 George Washington visited North Plainfield while en route from Trenton towards Philadelphia via Princeton; he stopped at Fort Hill whereupon many citizens came out to meet him and take pictures! Afterward General James Clinton entered Princeton for lunch at Fort Hill before continuing on his road trip southward; most likely stopping by North Plainfield for refreshments!
