When North Plainfield, New Jersey began to form as a community in the 1870s, they were among the first to embrace electric light. By 1907, North Plainfield had become one of the most electric-friendly communities in New Jersey and had installed over 1,000 streetlights. In 1912, the city erected its first pumpkins laser light show at Mount Vernon Park. The show continued every year until 1959. In 1965, North Plainfield instigated daylight Saving Time so that residents would have an extra hour of sleep during wintertime. Since then, other municipalities in New Jersey have followed suit and instituted Daylight Saving Time as well. In 1876, they opened a bakery on the same site. In 1916, North Plainfield's first school was built. It was called Plainfield High School until it became Ridgewood High School in 1964. In 1927, an electric power line was laid through the town by the Pennsylvania Railroad to provide power for local businesses and homes. In 1951, North Plainfield's first post office was established at 123 Elm Street. On July 1, 1957, when Ridgewood Township formed from part of Plainsboro Township,[2][3] North Plainfield became its second township.[4]

In 1677, the land that is now North Plainfield was part of the Township of Suffield. In 1837, it became a separate township. On April 15, 1908, it merged with Plainsboro to form the new municipality of North Plainfield.
