North Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. The town was formed on April 15, 1849 from part of the former township of Perth Amboy. It is named after George Washington and his family's plantation in Virginia. North Plainfield is located on the border of Middlesex and Essex counties. The first settler in North Plainfield was Andrew Nicholson who arrived there with his family on October 30, 1784. On December 5th of that year, he and his wife Esther set up a home on what is now Main Street in North Plainfield Township (now part of East Brunswick). John Nicholson also settled here around this time along with his brother-in-law Nicholas Vroman and their families: Tryphena (Tryphena Van Meter), Abraham (Abraham Vroman), Nathanael (Nathaniel Vroman), Eleazer (Eleazar Wexler) and Simon Purdy. On January 1st 1849, following the BurntWOOD Purchase Act of 1850 which granted land grants to persons who had helped suppress Native American hostilities during the American Revolution – including George Washington himself – North Plainfield became a separate township under the name "Perth Amboy." On March 1st 1851 it was renamed "North Plainfield Township," afterGeorge Washington's plantation where he had resided for many years prior to his death in 1800. North Plainfield experienced rapid growth during its early years as an agricultural community due to its location by way of Route 9 running through both townships side by side; farmers could bring their goods directly to market or take advantage of local transportation options such as stagecoaches or horses drawn wagons filled with food products from either region. This increased trade brought together people from both areas which helped create cultural ties that continue to this day among residents of both townships/cities combined today! In addition to its role as an agricultural center, North PlainFIELD also emerged as an important commercial center during this period due largely to its proximity to two major railroads: The Raritan Valley Railroad Company’s line running east-west through town connecting Newark Liberty International Airport with Camden Yardsand the Gloucester & Maryland Railroad Company’s line running northwest-southeast linking Elizabethtown with Trenton via Hackensack Creek Bridge over Christie Creek. Additionally, there were several small businesses established throughout these years such as Brown & Sons grocery store on High Street and Gadsden flour mill on Old Mill Road serving local farmers until 1945 when it closed down due primarily to World War II shortagesPlymouth Meeting Gazette Newspaper published here from 1865 until 1865 when it movedincorporating into Newark Daily News Newspaper operation

On November 5, 1677, English colonists named it "New Netherland" in honor of the Duke of Newcastle who had sent them there as reinforcements during the English Civil War. The township was first settled by Germans in the early 1800s. They brought their cattle and pigs to graze on the fresh open farmland that surrounded their small town for years. After a few months, they discovered that some of the land around their settlement was covered with dense chestnut trees which offered excellent grazing for their animals and provided shade from the hot sun during summer days. In 1825, North Plainfield became part of Bergen County after it was separated from Hudson County. At first, its citizens were mainly farmers who grew crops and raised livestock according to European tradition. However, over time this changed as North Plainfield began to grow into a major city with many businesses and residents who started using its services such as transportation, banking and commerce. Waterloo Avenue is one of North Plainfield's most famous streets because it is where much of what is now downtown originated- including First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) which opened its doors in 1865 and later became Macy's department store before being replaced by Sears & Roebuck in 1987. In addition, Rutgers University's iconic New Brunswick campus located on Boulevard Street also came about through business deals between North Plainfield businessmen John Coughlin and George Eastman (founder of Rochester), among others.
