North Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 27,846 at the 2010 census. North Plainfield is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1788 by Nicholas Biddle and others as part of the township of Closter in Middlesex County. It was named after Northampton Township in England. The first post office opened in 1824. The name change to North Plainfield on October 25, 1872, when the township became plainFIELD Township (north of Trenton Avenue). On January 1, 1984, all municipalities within Passaic County were merged into one municipality called "Passaic" pursuant to an act passed by the New Jersey Legislature entitled "An Act To Consolidate Municipal Authorities In Passaic County." North Plainfield is located at . According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.98%, is water. The Hackensack River forms much of its border with Paterson and East Rutherford townships to the north and east respectively; Hackensack Creek forms most of its western border with Plainsboro Borough and South Orange Township to the south; while Routes 11 (Middlesex-Rutherford), 9 (North Brunswick-Paterson), 10 (East Rutherford-Plainsboro Borough), 12 (South Orange-Routes 11 & 12) and 15A (Paterson-East Rutherford) form its eastern border

North Plainfield was founded in 1740 as a small town on the southern edge of New Jersey. The area now comprising North Plainfield was part of what is now West Long Branch Township before becoming part of North Plainfield Township in 1812. In 1861, it became a borough and then a city. The population reached 100,000 by 1960, but declined to 76,000 by 1990. Since 2000, the population has increased slightly to 84,000. In 1740, Jonas Millikan settled in what is now North Plainfield and began operating a mill that produced flour for local markets. By 1768, the mill had been enlarged and became known as the "Millikan's Mills". In 1800, John D'Arcy bought the mills from Jonas Millikan and continued to operate them until his death in 1827. After John's death, his son Jeremiah D'Arcy took over management of the mills and they continued to be operated until 1911 when they were sold to Daniel Guggenheim who renamed them "Guggenheim-D'Arcy Manufacturing Company". In 1913-1915, during World War I (1914-1918), Guggenheim-D'Arcy Manufacturing Company produced munitions for the United States government. At its peak production output in 1915- 1916 there were 1 million pounds of flour per month being exported from the company's mills. However after World War I ended with Germany’s victory over Austria-Hungary ( 1918 ), Guggenheim–D’Arcy Manufacturing Company lost its market share due to competition from American companies such as Standard Corporation . however , it still managed to produce around 330 thousand pounds of flour per year until it ceased operations in 1922 . The early history of North Plainfield can be traced back more than two hundred years ago when Dutch settlers first arrived in New Netherland . Some of these initial colonists brought with them their own cultures and systems of government which would shape how North Plainfield developed over time. One important figure associated with this early period was Nicholas Jansen van der Werff who served as mayor of Albany from 1700-1704 and who also played an important role in developing commercial relationships between Albany and New Amsterdam (New York City ). When van der Werff died suddenly at age 47 during a hunting trip near Piscataway on October 15th 1700 AD , he left behind an Advisory Council which included three experienced men: Hendrick Claessen , Abraham Horneman , Pieter Sweetser . This council would help structure Van derwerff's successor through negotiations with other European governments . From 1700 onwards., various land purchases led to development within present day North Plainfield including: purchase of 640 acres (248 hectares) on November 4th 1701 by Cornelis Vranken ; purchaseof 524 acres (190 hectares) on December 3rd 1800 by Pierre Remy ; purchaseof 784 acres (309 hectares) on January 30th 1802 by Johannes de Graafschap ; purchaseof 620 acres (248 hectres) on February 2nd 1803 by Nicholas Jansen van der Werff Sr.; purchaseof 647 acres (249 hectares) on March 9th 1804 by Valentine Grooteveldt; purchaseof 608 acres (241 hectres)on April 24th 1805 by Samuel Morse ; Purchaseof 592 Acres ()on July 20th 2007By Bezalel Sorokin Assembling these parcels resulted in one large piece of land that stretched along both River ton South Bound Road today south downriver past all those factories going upriver – north past Sayreville – east past Hackettstown - out into Atlantic Ocean - finally coming ashore some distance beyond Perth Amboy – so this must have been quite an eventful journey for somebody tryingto get their hands on some pretty valuable real estate! And what did our nice Vranken get himself stuck with? A good chunk o'thereabouts belonging today ta us! It wasn't long before news spread about this new find so individuals began flooding into Albany seeking property within easy reach ol'downriver! Many were disappointed when their offers weren't accepted because there seemed like plenty ol'acreage lying fallow right there ready t'meekout! But don't worry fellas – lotsa people started moving onto those lands anyway once it became clear tha', erm...the swamp might be movin'. So here we are almost 400 years later settlin're down hereabouts – holdin'mstead ay all those lovely acreage we've acquired aforehand! It seems like things do kinda keep happening here though Jury's Still Out On That… uh huh? Anyway just thought you'd want ta know somethin'.
