The name "north" was chosen to correspond with what today is known as First Street (Newark Avenue), which runs north-south through the center of town. According to one source, the first settler in what would become North Plainfield was John Fenton who arrived on October 25, 1684. He and his family may have been among those involved in an early movement for township formation in Middlesex County that fall. By 1701, there were ten families living in what would become North Plainfield Township: Fenton, Weyerhanssens (later Weyerhaeuser), Kappes (Kappenheimer), Glidden (Gleicher), Heyward (Heyward)Jr., Hildreth (Hildebrandt) and others. In 1764 when George Washington located his troops near present-day Plainsboro before going into battle against British forces at Trenton Bridge he ordered Captain Thomas Graves to erect a cross on Long Meadow betweenpresent-day Mount Auburn Road and Ridge Road - this remains one of only two such crosses remaining from that time period still standing in America. In 1814 Daniel Webster founded Webster Academy School; it wasn't until 1892 that it became part of Douglass High School which then merged with Rutgers University – Newark campus creating new Camden campuses). On November 5th of that year residents voted by referendum to annex parts of Essex County including PlainFIELD from Plank Township forming a new municipality known as North Plainfield Township on December 3rd due largely to their dissatisfaction with activities taking place within Douglass High School continuing unabated despite protests from students and faculty members about continued budget cuts essential for school operations

The first Europeans to visit what is now North Plainfield were Dutch traders living on Governors Island in 1664. In 1714, North Plainfield became part of Philadelphia after it was ceded from Nicholas-Township by Robert Morris as part of their boundary dispute with Gloucester Township. On July 1, 1765, North Plainfield became a township within Burlington County when its boundaries were adjusted by act of Parliament following the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolutionary War. The town was named for Jonathanouchedon (now Easton), an Englishman who had settled there in 1681. In 1834-35, large quantities of gold were discovered in nearby Monmouth County while mining operations were conducted near present day Allentown; this led to increased traffic and development around Monmouth Junction which lies between North Plainfield and Allentown on Route 26. This caused some inconvenience for residents as they needed to cross either road every time they wanted to go somewhere else in township or county; however this improved commutes gradually over time as businesses migrated closer together and better transportation options arrived. Today's economy relies primarily upon manufacturing including plastics products such as those used in automobiles and food packaging; however heavy industry has also been established around our downtown which contains several large companies including JDS Uniphase Corporation (the world's largest maker of polycarbonate materials), GE Healthcare America Inc., PFC Corp., Schneider Electric AG among others. Additionally many small businesses have sprung up throughout our community providing essential services such as grocery stores, hair salons/spas etc.; making it one of the most economically diverse areas in New Jersey with nearly every type of business represented!
