Binoculars have been around for centuries, and North Plainfield, New Jersey is home to some of the oldest and most well-known binocular businesses in the country. The first binocular store in North Plainfield was established by two brothers, Isaac and Solomon Dyer, in 1849. Today, there are more than 20 binocular businesses scattered throughout North Plainfield and surrounding towns. The origin of the modern-day binocular business can be traced back to 1795 when a group of Dutch men set up a small optical shop in what is now Hackensack. With the help of their friends, they began manufacturing microscopes and other scientific devices. Over time, these shops grew into large companies that supplied goods to villages all over New Jersey. In 1849, two brothers founded the first Binocular Store in North Plainfield with the goal of selling quality optical equipment to enthusiasts all over Northeast Pennsylvania. The success of this venture led them to open another store in 1850 on High Street between Morristown and Trenton. This store became one of the biggestbinocular retailers in America at its time. In 1962, both stores were sold to Magnavox Corporation for $2 million dollars. At Magnavox Corporation’s discretion, particularized optics products were produced at different production plants located throughout Upstate New York; these products became known as “Magnavox Optics” products. Today, North Plainfield’sbinocular businesses continue to sell top-quality optics equipment through online sales channels as well as physical locations across town. Some notable members of this industry include Bausch & Lomb (now part of Nikon), Leica Camera AG (now Panasonic), Bushnell Instruments Inc., Seiko Optical Co., Ltd., Tokina Electric Co., Ltd., Schneider Kreuznach AG (now Schneider Electric) and Swarovski SA (now Sveta). North Plainfield, New Jersey is a town located in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,139 at the 2010 census. North Plainfield is also the home of Princeton University. North Plainfield was first settled in 1747 and chartered as a township on November 7, 1785. The name "north" comes from the early English settlers who surveyed this area and thought it would make for an advantageous location because of its natural resources (the north-eastern edge of the Dutch colonies). The original village of North Plainfield was developed near what is now the intersection of Routes 9W and 102A. In 1827, a post office called North Plainfield was established on land that included present-day South Brunswick Township and part of present-day East Brunswick Township. The name "north" originally referred to the entire township while "plain" meant "flat." Because many farmers were situated around Roundabout Manor which served as their main watering point, Roundabout Manor became known colloquially as "The Flatlands". It wasn't until after World War II that residents began to refer to their community as simply "North Plainfield." In 1875, two new towns were formed in Union County – West Orange and East Orange – based on portions of what are now Princeton Township and South Brunswick Township. These towns had no connection with either North Plainfield or roundaboutmanor. When those Towns merged into plainfield back in 1905 they retained their separate names but met again within twenty years to form one entity – Princeton University Campus/North PlainFIELD (PUC/NPC) – still headquartered in North PlainFIELD today! Today's population totals 12,139 people living inside Borough borders: 6951 people residing within North Brunswick Township; 4771 people residing within South Brunswick Township; 3463 people residing within East Brunswick Township; and 2247 people residing wholly or partially within Princeton University Campus/North PlainFIELD! This makes for an sizable municipality with plenty of cultural diversity - something we can all appreciate!
The town of North Plainfield was founded in 1755 by British colonists. It became a borough in 1834 and an incorporated municipality in 1903. The population of North Plainfield was 27,898 at the 2010 census.
