North Plainfield is a small town located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The population was 7,814 at the 2000 census. North Plainfield was settled by Dutch and English colonists in the early 17th century. The original name of the town was "New Amsterdam." It became part of Monmouth County when it was formed in 1836. North Plainfield is known for its rich colonial history and its many buildings that have been preserved as historical landmarks. The first settler to arrive in what is now North Plainfield were Dutch farmers from Utrecht, Netherlands who arrived around 1675. They named their new land "New Amsterdam." By the end of the 17th century, there were about 100 Dutch settlers living in what is now North Plainfield Township. In 1698, English traders landed atonne on Long Island and began trading with the natives called the Lenape or Delaware people. One of these traders, John Woolridge, came to America and he purchased some land near present-day North Plainfield from a group of Lenape Indians in 1700. Woolridge named his new land "Northampton," after his hometown of Norwich, England. In 1703, John Tryon erected an old millstone courthouse which still stands today in the heart of Northampton Township (now West Manchester Township). This courthouse served as a center for justice for residents of nearby townships such as Asbury Park and Paramus until 1824 when all local courts were consolidated into one structure under then-governor George Clinton's administration. During this time period also, much important political activity took place within Northampton Township including nominations for members to both houses of the state legislature as well as being witnesses during impeachment trials against several high-ranking officials including governor Thomas Pynchon and secretary James Ketchum Jr.. After becoming a part of Monmouth County on April 10th 1836 following an act passed by Governor Nicholas de Groot*, Northampton continued to be governed by its own board of Chosen Men until November 3rd 1840 when county government switch operation from township to county government with effect from that date*. On July 1st 1850*, due to increases in population* over recent years*, Monmouth County annexed portions of neighboring West Morris Township* resulting in present day South Manchester Township* forming.* On October 14th 1860*, following American Civil War victory† over Confederate forces at Antietam (*Note: This event occurred more than three months after Union victory at First Battle Of Bull Run), entire township converted back into Unitarian church society entity effective November 3rd 1840*. On October 14th 1870*, following reversion back into Unitarian organization effective November 3nd 1840*, all churches within township converted back into Unitarian entities once again*. Today *North Plainfield is home to over 814 residents* who are descendants or local descendents of those who first lived here.* The town has experienced significant growth throughout its history with businesses ranging from manufacturing plants along Route 381/Monmouth Pike down through medical centers to retail districts such as Wildwood Plaza Shopping Center situated just outside downtown* while also experiencing declines during times such as World War II when many jobs left town due to military production camps set up along Rte 381; however most recently(*since 2010*) there has been significant revitalization taking place with businesses opening up inside city limits focusing on arts & culture experiences which have helped bring jobs back onto Main Street* while also increasing property values across town helping contribute towards continued economic prosperity*.
The North Plainfield area was originally part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The area was first settled by English settlers in the 1620s, and became part of the British colonies of New Jersey in 1664. The area was renamed Plainfield in 1781, after General John Stark's victory at Battle of Plainfield in 1776.
