Ammunition has been around for centuries, and North Plainfield is among the earliest communities to embrace its use. The town was founded in 1795 by Loyalists who fled the British during the American Revolution. Ammunition production began in earnest in 1804, when a group of men led by James Caldwell purchased a powder mill and foundry in what is now North Plainfield Township. Over time, other businesses were established to manufacturing ammunition including Black & Decker, Miller-Leach, Colt's Manufacturing Company, Winchester Repeating Arms Company and others. During World War II, ammunition production increased as war raged on all over the world. In 1942, North Plainfield produced munitions for General Motors Corporation's (GMC) tanks and artillery pieces; this was the first time that GMC had contracted with local manufacturers to produce munitions. Ammunition production continued through 1945 thanks to wartime demand and a government push for militarily valuable material. After the war ended, efforts began to reduce military stockpiles both domestically and abroad; this led to an increase in civilian ammunition production throughout New Jersey. Over time, many different types of ammunition have been produced: rifle rounds such as those used in hunting or target shooting; pistol rounds such as those used in self-defense or competition; shotgun shells; mortar rounds (used by artillery units); rockets (for bombardment from warships or airfields);and more. Ammunition manufacturers and traders have come and gone over the years, but the tradition of manufacturing ammunition continues today in North Plainfield. The first factory in North Plainfield was opened by George W. Sears in 1871. The company made .50-caliber rounds as well as other calibers. In 1875, James Aiken founded JAP Arms Company with his brother John Aiken. JAP Arms manufactured rifles and shotguns as well as ammo for them. Aiken became president of Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1896 after he purchased JAP Arms from James Aiken’s brother John Aiken. Winchester Repeating Arms Company built its first plant in 1903 to make Winchesters and other firearms products under the name “Winchester & Scott Ammo Incorporated” until it merged with Remington Firearms Corporation in 1995 to form Remington Rand Corporation (now known as ATK). During World War II, Winchester was among the companies that produced munitions for the United States military. The company produced shells for both incendiary and armor-piercing rounds. After World War II, Winchester began producing sporting rifles such as Super Xs and Model 7s under their own nameplate rather than using handguns or rifle models from other manufacturers like Colt or Ruger which were then branded by those manufacturers under different namesplates like Browning Auto Parts or Savage Armament Sales (Savage). When cartridge production moved from lead acid batteries to nickel-cadmium batteries in the early 1990s, Winchester switched back to lead acid battery manufacture because nickel-cadmium batteries are more expensive to produce than lithium ion batteries1
North Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,569 at the 2010 census. North Plainfield is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1788 by Germans and Dutch colonists as a small farmstead on the east bank of the Passaic River. It became a borough in 1834 and an independent municipality in 1868. As of 2018, North Plainfield had a total population of 27,824 making it one of the most populous towns in Hunterdon County and one of the most populous cities in New Jersey. The Townsquare Shopping Center is located just outside of town on Route 9A and offers more than 20 stores including Macy's, Sears, JCPenney, American Brands (formerly Dillard's), Nordstrom Rack and Lord & Taylor. The center is home to two schools - North Plainfield Elementary School which serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade; also located within walking distance are NJIT's downtown campus with its galleries and theaters as well as Seton Hall University which offers graduate level programs in business and law. The eastern border of town runs along Interstate 95 where Interstate 287 meets it to form a north-south belt that continues into Pennsauken Township to Meetup Township to form another belt that skirts around Monmouth Junction before ending at Atlantic City Naval Station on Long Beach Boulevard near the former site of Thomas Edison's experimental light company headquarters

North Plainfield is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,758 at the 2010 census. North Plainfield was formed from a merger of two other towns on January 1, 1875, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. It is named for John PlainFIELD, who had been appointed as commissioner of Internal Revenue in 1795 and served until his death in 1801. The township's first settler was Nicholas Denison, who arrived May 25th, 1682, and named his tract Northampton Township. On November 12th of that year the first meeting of the board of Chosen Freeholders was held; it consisted of thirteen men only among whom were Mr. Denison and four others who dwelt within the limits then assigned to him: these were George Read (now Easton), John White (now West Stockbridge), William Sims (now Union City), Nathanael Greene (now Hackensack) and Samuel Shriver (now South Brunswick). On February 14th, 1798 a committee chosen by lot met to survey land within what is now North Plainfield Township; they made surveys starting from where Mount Lebanon now stands and going along Delaware River to Haddon Heights on November 30th following which they laid out lots on March 6th same year: this settlement lay between where Dover Street now stands and Sunbury Road east thereof - bounded also by what is now Princeton University property line northward thence up State street till it reached home field west thereof aforesaid to wit: three hundred acres or thereabouts including all about Mount Lebanon aforesaid - under one overseer for ever after named Richard Mills…The first deed recorded in this township went vested with proprietorship therein on July 26th following when HonestyJohnson conveyed unto Thomas Spicer &c., Quartering House Lots Nos 5 & 6 in pursuance hereto having leased them back twenty years before that date…. This early landholding provides some indication as to how township boundaries evolved over time. As North Plainfield grew larger its boundaries began to change as well-northwest toward Princeton Avenue became part of Burlington County while southcentral towards Sunbury Road became part of Somerset County. In 1872 Township Administrator Thomas Conway reported that "the whole district lying between Newark Liberty Railroad tracks northerly...and home field east thereof" had been annexed into Trenton during the Panic crisis but no deeds reflecting this annexation have yet been found. In 1875 a group led by Elijah Howe formed a company called The Newark Trust Company with business dealings throughout New York City; Howell lobbied hard for township incorporation so North Plainfield could be included within his expanding empire. On January 1st1875 the new town formers merged with neighboring Newton TWP., forming what is today known as Middlesex County which included parts of Essex and Passaic Counties adjacent to NJ shoreline
On North Plainfield Avenue, stands a small block of brick and mortar architecture that has been in business since 1792. The building is currently used as the town hall, and was once home to the pausing post office.
