It is part of the Newark–East Orange–Hudson Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Arlington is located on Route 9W, about 8 miles (13 km) north of the former Trenton-Ewing border and 5 miles (8 km) south-southwest of the latter Parsippanyborder. The first Europeans to visit what is now North Arlington were Dutch traders travelling along the upper Delaware River in 1624. They named their new location "Netherlands" after their homeland in Holland. In 1781, when Morristown was founded as a borough by President George Washington, Netherland became North Arlington and then Middlesex County. In 1871, when Parsippany Township was created from parts of Middlesex and Essex Counties east of Hackensack River*, it included most of what is now North Arlington* (*excluding portions now within Rahway and South Hackensack townships). In 1916, when World War I began with Germany's declaration of war on Austria* (*the largest conflict between Germany and Austria up to that time), North Arlington residents opposed joining America because they felt that neutrality would be violated. The town joined America only after pressure from American military leaders who saw German espionage activity near Trenton* (*northwestern Pennsylvania*)*. During World War II, many businesses in North Arlington closed down during the Nazi regime's occupation; however*, many remained open even after hostilities ended to support Allied troops returning home from Europe. One such business was The Wexner Brewery which operated out of an old ice cream truck parked outside local grocery store until 1944*. [* postwar restrictions on brewing companies led Wexner to close its doors for good in 1948] The post-war economy has been dominated by two main industries: health care and manufacturing.* [*cities like Camden have seen more recent growth due to immigrants coming here for work]. North Arlington, NJ is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. North Arlington was formed on February 17, 1856 from portions of Rahway and Perth Amboy. It became an independent municipality on April 14, 1959. On November 3rd, 2015 North Arlington voters passed a referendum that would change its name to Borough of Paramus; this change took effect on January 1st, 2016. The history of North Arlington date back to the early 1800s when English colonists arrived in what is now Middlesex County and began developing their farms and villages around Rahway Lake. In 1856, extensive land were acquired by the township of Rahway for development as part of a larger townshipwide project known as “The Great Township Improvement Scheme” which aimed to make Middlesex County more efficient and attractive for settlement by creating new townships with sizeable areas to be developed. The first townhome developments in North Arlington were built between 1860-1862 by developers John Fenton and James Prentice under the name “Rahway Lakeside”. In 1861-1865 two other townshippages – West Somerville and East Somerville – were established within Rahway Township based upon recommendations made by officials with the scheme! These Townshippages served as models for future municipalities which would be formed throughout Middlesex County as part of The Great Township Improvement Scheme. In 1875-1876 an additional 2 square miles (5 km2) were annexed into Rahway Township from Perth Amboy Township after a referendum vote by residents thereon! This annexation increased the size of North Arlington from 5square miles (15 km2) to 11 square miles (30 km2). At this time it also became apparent that larger municipalities would be necessary if South Brunswick was going to compete with neighboring Trenton for economic growth within our county! Accordingly on February 17th 1856 North Arlington was organized as an independent municipality! On April 14th 1959 following passage of legislation granting full local autonomy within Middlesex County pursuant to The Great Township Improvement Scheme - including changes to boundaries & hours of operation -North Arlington became an official borough!
