North Arlington is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. North Arlington was incorporated as a borough on March 10, 1897. On July 1, 2016, it became an unincorporated community within the township of Irvington. The first settlement in what is now North Arlington was made on August 14, 1776 by British soldiers during the American Revolutionary War when they set up camp near present-day Garfield Park to wait out the French and Indian War from their positions along the Susquehanna River. The first settler in what would become North Arlington was George Washington who established his farm there in 1777 after being discharged from the Continental army. George Washington's farmstead would later be known as Mount Vernon and remain family property until 1923 when it passed to John Fenton Cooke who sold it to Julius Rosenwald for $5 million dollars which created one of America's largest real estate empires. Rosenwald used North Arlington Depot as his headquarters while he ran his empire which included railroad enterprises and many high-profile companies such as Sears Roebuck and Ford Motor Company among others The first post office in what is now North Arlington opened on October 5, 1801 under postal name Easton Township with Samuel Dickinson serving as its first postmaster On November 6th 1802 North Arlington became part of Middlesex County when it was annexed by Newark In 1841 Abraham Lincoln visited North Arlington for a day before he delivered a speech at Madison Square Garden One of only two acts ever performed outside of President Lincoln's home (the other being Abraham Lincoln's Farewell Address) this event took place at Goree House located just east of present day Garfield Park off Adams Street where Mr./ Mrs./ Miss.) presided over a dinner crowd that included both local dignitaries including Judge Augustus Ewing Holmes (1801-1886), grandson of Moses Hess (1792-1867) founder/prime mover and financier behind Pennsylvania Railroad Company; state Representative Robert Cushman (R – West Deptford Township; 1835-1921); members of Congress Edwin Dyer Post (D – Paramus; 1830-1912) and Prentiss Hogg Teague (D – Morristown; 1840-1925). North Arlington was originally a part of Newark, New Jersey. The area was first settled by Dutch and British colonists in the 17th century. North Arlington became an incorporated city in 1876. In 1909, it became part of Bergen County.
