North Arlington is located on the west side of South Orange Avenue in Edison Township and east of the Newark–Jersey City line. It borders Runnymede to the north, Caldwell to the east and south, West Deptford to the west and Livingston to the northwest. The name "North Arlington" was given to it by royal proclamation in 1715 for land that had been purchased from Native Americans by John Derryfield. Derryfield named his purchase "Newark", after his home city in England. The town was incorporated as a township on February 14, 1867. On July 1, 1951, it became a borough with its own government and name change; it reverted back to township status on August 29th of that year. On January 1st of this year (2011), North Arlington became an incorporated village with its own government and name change; it reverted back to borough status on October 15th of that year). North Arlington is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. North Arlington is part of the Newark–Newark Liberty City metropolitan area. It is bordered by South Brunswick to the north and east, Brick Township to the south and west, and East Brunswick to the southwest. The township was formed from parts of Elizabethtown Township on April 1, 1813. On February 14, 1838, it became a city after being granted municipal status by an act of the State Legislature. On November 3rd of that year Governor James K. Polk signed an act annexing it as a city with its own government under a mayor and four council members made up of citizens elected at-large for two years each; this change followed annexation of Elizabethtown Township which had been merged into NewarkBehance on October 15th that year due to population growth thereabouts and decline in manufacturing activity in Elizabethtown Township which led to its original form as Elizabethtown Borough (now part of East Brunswick). On January 1st 1902 North Arlington incorporated as a borough under the name "Elizabethtown". The first election held pursuant to this incorporation took place on November 4th 1902 with Charles Wills asMayor; he served until his death on May 12th 1903. At that time John Fenton became Mayor succeeding Wills who had died suddenly only days before office began. The Borough Trustees were: Chas Hays (President), Geo Laughlin (Vice President), Jno Sperry (Secretary) & Geo Aiken (Treasurer). On December 12th 1903 James Rankin became Mayor succeeding Fenton who had also become Borough Trustee while still serving as Mayor of Elizabethtown Borough effective January 1st 1904 having previously been Acting Mayor since Fenton's sudden death just days before taking office. With Rankin in office full time North Arlington enjoyed some stability until 1914 when businessman Harry Peppermintz bought all but one vote on the Board of Education thereby ousting Rankin from Office effective February 28th 1914 following resistance from Chief Education Officer Drury Gillett over Peppermintz's plans for high school built outside town limits within sight but without tax payers' consent or input in what would become known as "the Gillett Plan." This event effectively ended any semblance of governance or control over school decisions by either municipality or borough with control instead passing wholly unto Peppermintz who proceeded to establish himself directly rather than through board members appointed by mayors/trustees like previous instances where such authority might have been necessary given mayoral conflicts etc.). A new Board was appointed effective March 7th 1915 withrankin remaining Chairman until his death after two terms in office; during his tenure education goals shifted away from providing indoor sports programs within town limits towards promoting citizenship development courses throughout municipality serious crime rates declined although much community criticism emerged around what many saw as excessive spending coupled with increasing economic hardship caused largely by World War I - see below for more details about this period). After Rankin's death Councilman Burt Scherrer assumed Chairmanship becoming leader until 1917 when he too passed away leaving vacant that position resulting in Councilman Al Lerner taking over leadership role until1921 when Lerner again passed away leaving open another seat on Council upon his death giving rise once again to Councilman Burt Scherrer taking over leadership role facto facto continuing dual power between both municipalities even unto today despite assertions otherwise by some authorities]. During World War I North Arlington experienced some significant upheaval including: In 1916 Factory workers went out onto Long Branch Road near Pemberton Avenue striking against their employers demanding better wages then they were receiving while other factories continued production unaffected Employees at Byhalia Rubber Company walked off their jobs beginning September 30ST 1915 protesting low wages after eight months working minimum wage conditions while company continued production unchanged
The area that is now North Arlington, New Jersey was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1624, the English began their own colony in what is now New Jersey. The land for this new colony was donated by Baron de Vries. The English name for the area was Monmouth County. The first home built in Monmouth County was on West Milford Avenue in 1627.
