North Arlington, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,898 at the 2010 census. North Arlington is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was first settled in 1795 and was incorporated as a borough on April 15, 1874. The town's name comes from two Dutch words "nord" meaning north and "harris" meaning township or hamlet. The area now known as North Arlington was originally part of Westfield Township (now called Uniontown), which also included Rahway and Garfield Heights. On March 14, 1795, the British army burned down the home of Anthony de Hart in what is now North Arlington after he refused to surrender his weapons to the British troops in Boston during the American Revolutionary War. This event helped start what would become one of North Arlington's most famous businesses - Anthony DeHart's Wharf - which made its first sale of goods on July 12th of that year. In 1834, Southwick Township formed from parts of Westfield Township and became separate from North Arlington until it merged into Bergen County on January 1st 1959. On April 15, 1874, North Arlington becoming an independent borough with a population of just over 100 people when it annexed portions of Southwick Township including Rahway and Garfield Heights along with Winslow Borough forming what would be known as Rahway-Garfield Heights Borough (renamed East Brunswick on February 22nd 1978). The incorporation date for this merger may have been due to some tension between these towns about whether they should have been incorporations together or separately given their different populations size wise but ultimately it worked out well because both towns had similar demographics - all were small villages before becoming municipalities - so there wasn’t much need for duplication within their borders Ferry Road / Old Fort Hill Road were once 2 main routes connecting these villages with each other however they are now only minor roads passing through communities instead functioning more like neighborhood streets today Withdrawn during construction were 3 large reservoirs located near present day Kearny Mesa Boulevard – Hackensack River reservoir; Glen Ridge Reservoir; and White Sands Lake Reservoir but these are now all gone having been replaced by smaller lakes that don’t provide any water source whatsoever Today’s residents can walk/bike everywhere within their boundaries without ever needing to leave their homes except for going to church services at various churches located throughout town center & beyond& There are no schools within sight & yet today’s students attend high school in adjacent Newark while attending pre-kindergarten classes in neighboring Southwick Township open enrollment program Inaugurated in 2009 by NJ governor Chris Christie In 1840 local entrepreneur John Smeaton built a gristmill on Rumson Creek east of present day Belvidere Avenue near current day High school where he resided until his death in 1845 After Smeaton's death many people continued to operate small mills here such as John Fenton who operated a mill here until 1862 john Larkin who moved his flour business here beginning in 1865 continuing until 1898 when he sold it to George Pappas who ran it until 1906 When Pappas died his son took over operations then purchased by Mr. Gurney who operated it from 1916-1924 before selling it back to Mr2 Gurney Sr who operated it again until 1951 when Mill Meadows bought it There has never been any formal annexation process done by either municipality since they both consist mostlyof rural areas surrounded by municipalities so whenever someone wants another municipality added onto their community map they simply notify either municipality & request annexation which usually happens fairly quickly regardless Of how much land might be needed To this day residents continueTO farm there land supplementing electric lights & heat with firewood collected from surrounding forests daily thanks largely to donations received from surrounding municipalities thru email listserveserve@northarlingtonNJ1
The North Arlington neighborhood in New Jersey was founded in 1868 as a farmstead on the Allegheny River. The area would later become one of the most developed and affluent neighborhoods in the state. The community's name comes from its location on Arlington Avenue, which ran through it at the time. The original house that was built here still stands today, and is now used as a museum.
