North Arlington is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,411 at the 2010 census. North Arlington is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now North Arlington were Dutch farmers who landed on Long Island in 1624. They named their new settlement "New Utrecht" after the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The first permanent European settler was John Smith who purchased land from the Dutch in 1626. He built a small cabin on what is now Main Street and called it "Smith's Hope." In 1629, English traders arrived with an Indian Trading Expedition and discovered valuable natural resources such as coal, iron ore, and salt water beachheads near present-day Seaside Heights and Bricktown. They renamed the area for Sir Edward Coke (1597-1658), Chief Secretary to Oliver Cromwell (1642-51). In 1714, British colonists arrived under Lieutenant Governor Thomas Dongan from Rhode Island with 8 tons of tea bought from China by Colonel John Norris. This shipment led to increased tensions between Great Britain and its American colonies over taxation issues; however, nothing came of these hostilities until 1764 when Boston merchants successfully pressured Parliament into passing a law authorizing them to trade with China without tariffs or quotas. A year later, North Arlington became one of five towns within Middlesex County to receive a charter from George Washington as Township No. 4 (later Borough) on November 3rd, 1766; this followed similar actions by South Brunswick (1765), Plainfield (1767),Rahway (1768),and Holmdel (1770). The township was divided into two parts on February 14th 1812 by decision of the Board of Chosen Freeholders: Upper Township became North Arlington while Lower Township became South Brunswick; both had been portions of Rahway Township since it was formed on November 3rd 1766 following the merger of West Morristown and East Morristown municipalities under that name two years earlier In 1834 during Robert Morris's banking career as Treasury Agent for New Jersey he constructed four brick buildings at 265 Broadwalk which are still standing today – three remain unoccupied but are museum property while one has been renovated as office space for One Essex Place LLP situated above it . Morris also donated $10 per capita annually towards building maintenance lasting until 1919 whenNJ Turnpike Authority took over responsibility for funding these repairs/maintenance efforts . The Morris Buildings were added to Rutgers University's list of National Historic Landmarks (#722) on October 15th 1978 . The township lost its charter status due to slot machine gaming becoming legal throughout New Jersey starting in 1922; however some residents kept using their old charters until they expired or were revoked by local authorities en masse around 1951 effectively ending all township operations except ceremonial functions such as elections etc.; this left only those living within boroughs which continued functioning although with different names etc.. On January 1st 1974 all boroughs merged into Asbury Park NJ creating an even greater municipality than before but retaining vestigial township functions including election voting etc.. Today there are no scheduled ceremonies or events taking place within any municipality other than Asbury Park NJ Today North Arlington is home to many businesses that have sprung up due largely to its proximity to major metropolitan areas like Newark Liberty International Airport and Jersey City

Thetown's inhabitants had put up resistance until help arrived from ships offshore. The townsfolk suffered more than 50 casualties before being routed and burned to the ground. The event is commemorated by a monument located in North Arlington that reads "4th of July, 1776."
