North Arlington, New Jersey was founded in 1834 by Isaac Harmon and his wife Catharine. The Harmon family had come to the area from Newtown, Connecticut. North Arlington became a township in 1851 and later became an unincorporated community. In 1916, the town added a post office to its name. By 1923, North Arlington had a population of about 350 people. The post office closed in 1933. During World War II, North Arlington was home to the United States Naval Air Station North Arlington (NAS North Arlington). NAS North Arlington operated civilian aircraft during World War II, including bombers such as the B-29 Superfortress and P-38 Lightning airplane type programs. NAS North Arlington also produced dive bombers such as the F4U Corsair and Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes. After the war, NAS North Arlington transitioned into an air force base with the activation of Fifth Air Force on October 1st 1945. NAS North Arlington served as HQ USAF Ninth Air Force until its closure on September 30th 1962 due to budget cuts within AFHQ structure at that time Today, NAS North Arlington is still used for storage and recreation purposes by USAAF Reserve members conducting flyovers of IAF exercises at various locations around NJ each year since it reopened in 2013 after being mothballed for 10 years!

In 1822, North Arlington became the counties seat of Middlesex County. In 1912, the Township of North Arlington was organized and named in honor of General George Washington.
