North Arlington, New Jersey is a city in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 30,439 as of the 2010 Census. North Arlington is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area and is adjacent to Newark Airport. It borders Elizabethtown to the south, Paramus to the east, Rahway to the north, and East Orange to the west. The site of today's North Arlington was first inhabited by Lenape Indians. The first European settler in what is now North Arlington was Dutchman Johannes Heinsius who arrived on July 5th, 1684 with his family from Amsterdam. In 1701 Abraham van der Kolk built a home on land that he purchased from Heinsius and changed its name to "Haddon Township" after his father-in-law Pieter de Hooch. In 1710 John Sinclair bought two lots from van der Kolk for £100 each and renamed them "North Arlington". Dutchman Hendrick Hendrickson arrived in what is now North Arlington on October 15th, 1714 with his family from Rotterdam. On November 7th he purchased 2/3 of lot 1 from Nicholas D’Aquila for £135 and changed its name to "Dover Township". On January 6th1715 Hendrickson married Maria Margaretha de Vos at Dover Presbyterian Church which were located across the street from where his house still stands today (now known as South Campus). On February 10th1715 Hendrickson sold lot 2 back to Nicholas D’Aquila for £120 cash plus 4 rods (a measure equal to 1/8 acre) of meadow or pasture that adjoined lot 1 at Dover Township Line Streetside Park today known as West Campus Drive between Delaware Avenue & Morris Street near where modern day Livingston High School sits. This property later became part of Princeton University which moved there in 1871 when it took over Haddon Township Hospital property then owned by Trinity College (later Princeton University). In 1728 Nicolaas de la Grange Purchased Lots 3 & 4 From Nicholas D’Aquila For £300 And Changed Their Names To "East Brunswick", "Trenton", & "New Brunswick". In 1800 Deacon David Hoge made an Agreement With Lord Cornbury To Purchase All Of What Is Now Delaware Avenue From Hudson River To Make A Road Called L'Academy road Which led From Trenton Onto George Washington Boulevard Today's Route 9w commencing At L'Academy Rd Then Right hand side thru Montgomery Ave., Edison Ave., Randolph Rd., Raritan Rd., Weehawken Ave.(Now Route 9W), Underwood Ave.(NowRoute 62) And ending At The Bridge Over The Raritan River(NowRoute 8W) Which Once Was Known As State Road 11x Today's Camden County Pikewwashington Blvd.) According To Mr Daniel Guralnick A Boundary Change happened On December 22nd 1800 When One Side Of Lennox Lewis Road Got Reduced By Lot Size So That Georges Washington Boulevard Ended Up Alongside Trenton Avenue Neartoday's Borough Of Woodbridge.) In 1805 Nicholas D'Aulla Sold His Home On Delaware avenue To John Sinclair Who Renamed It “North Arlington” After Himself And His Wife Margaret Who Was Born There June 26th 1700emphasis added) .John Sinclair Built AHome Here Named “ achievable Manor House” Which Still stands Today& Became An academy For Boys In 1873 .After John Sinclair Died In 1861 His Widow Jane Suffocated Inside It Feb 13 1865 When Her Babies Were Playing Outside .) AfterJane Sinclair Bought Another Home Here Named “ achievable Manor House” Which Still stands Today& Became An academy For Girls In 1874 But NOW It Is A Museum Representing Early 20th Century American Life .) During World War II Many People Died Including My Grandfather Joseph Miano Jr Who Served Our country As An Infantryman ) After World War II Most Of The Homes Here Became Homeless Or Lost Their Value So They Have Been Torn Down Except For One Home That still standing (& Used As A Kindergartner Center ) .During This Time I Was Born & Finished Grade School here .)
