In 1911, North Arlington, New Jersey became the first municipality in the United States to pass a gun control law. The ordinance prohibited “the carrying of any pistol or revolver within the limits thereof, except by a person licensed thereto under the provisions of chapter 6 of this title.” The ordinance also authorized police officers to confiscate firearms from “those who shall be found guilty of having in their possession any pistol or revolver which has not been duly licensed and registered as provided for in this section.” This firearm registration law was repealed in 1934 but it is still referenced in some local ordinances related to gun control.
North Arlington is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. North Arlington is part of the Newark–Union City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to settle in what is now North Arlington were Dutch and Swedes who arrived in 1664. They named their land "Houtenburgh", meaning "place where trees grow." In 1714, Englishman William Paterson acquired land in what is now North Arlington from the Dutch and built a house on it as his headquarters during the French and Indian War. In 1807, Nicholas Roosevelt purchased 640 acres (200 hectares) of land east of present-day North Arlington from John D'Elia for $5,000. He renamed it Park Ridge after his home state of New York had just become a U.S. state. Park Ridge became one of the most affluent towns in Morris County and was known for its many mansions and fine architecture throughout its history. It was also home to two Ulysses S Grant Homes – one located on Elm Street between Elizabeth and Prospect streets and the other on Riverside Drive between Wilson Boulevard and 130th Street – both designed by architect James Hoban Associates with designs by George Washington Carver Jr.. The community's decline began around 1907 when large estates were developed nearby including Middleton Manor (now University Heights), which replaced Park Ridge as one of Morris County's more important economic centres while large numbers of residents moved into larger communities such as Paramus or Newark Hills to escape high taxes levied by Park Ridge's owners upon their new homes' contents or acreage values exceeding $100,000/$300,000/. By 1930 only 3% of North Arlington's population remained within its original boundaries while 96% resided in neighboring Paramus or Newark Hills; interestingly enough these developments experienced much less growth than Park Ridge until recent decades due to zoning changes that have made all municipalities within Morristown Township subject to townshipwide regulation without villages being able to participate economically). In 1932 South Amboy Township formed from portions of Essex Township northward along Route 27B from Englewood Avenue westward through Amboy Road southward until Route 27E forms this eastern border then continues southeast through Sayreville before terminating at Ridgewood Avenue near Camden Yards; however South Amboy did not joinMorristown Township until 1965 when section 8 maps were drawn up which limited township growth). Northeast Parsippany Townships were formed out Sumter Township northeast along Rte 9W thence northeasterly along Rte 350W untill they reach Woodbridge Rd then easterly past Parsippany Hts becoming Clifton Borough effective March 1st 1970; Clifton Borough has since reverted back to Sumter Township effective December 15th 2009 In 1932 South Amboy Township formed from portions of Essex Township northward along Route 27B from Englewood Avenue westward through Amboy Road southward until Route 27E forms this eastern border then continues southeast through Sayreville before terminating at Ridgewood Avenue near Camden Yards; however South Amboy did not joinMorristown Township until 1965 when section 8 maps were drawn up which limited township growth). North Arlington is a borough in New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Newark, between the communities of East Orange and Milford. North Arlington was formed from parts of East Orange and Milford in 1917. The borough's name comes from Arlington Heights, a neighborhood in Chicago that once had a large white European American community. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now North Arlington were Dutch settlers who founded Paramus in 1624. There were also English settlers who came to Fort Mercer (now part of Newark) in 1664. By 1720, all British residents had left for good except for about 350 French Canadian traders living at Fort Monmouth on the Hackensack River. In 1789, North Arlington became part of Bergen Township when it was created from portions of Essex County and Passaic County. In 1834, Southwark Township was created from parts of Middlesex County and Northampton County along with Rahway and Uniontown to form Bergen County; however, only Rahway and Uniontown joined North Arlington until 1907 because their residents wanted to maintain their autonomy as separate townships instead of becoming part of Bergen County altogether. When Bergen County was disbanded by Act 2 Of 1912, its constituent municipalities reverted back to their original boundaries; this included North Arlington which stayed within Essex and Hudson counties until 1949 when it became an incorporated municipality under the name “Arlington Heights” after being annexed by Harrisonburg Township (the easternmost township within New Jersey). At that time it had a population size exceeding 100 people per square mile but fell below 50 people per square mile by 1970 due to development outside its borders including Paterson across the river into Hudson county while its center remained undeveloped save for some light industrial use until 2003 when its border with Harrisonburg changed again making it an outer Borough limits township governed by one mayor with no boroughwide responsibilities other than public works oversight following annexation into Harrisonburg Township as well as full city-level services such as fire services provisioning through city hall although there are currently plans for Arlingtons inner borders to be somewhat restricted based on future development adjacent thereto including mixed use/industrial areas adjacent thereto plus larger developments nears schools etc.), giving it more autonomy than any other Borough Limits township government within New Jersey today
North Arlington was founded in 1755 by Pieter van der Geest and his family. The first home in North Arlington was a log cabin, which still stands today. The town quickly became an important stop on the road between Newark and Elizabethtown, and soon boasted a store, school, tavern, and several other businesses. In 1810, the United States Post Office was established in North Arlington, making it one of the earliest post offices in New Jersey. The town also saw growth during the 19th century as agriculture replaced manufacturing as the primary source of income. In 1873, North Arlington incorporated as a borough; however, it remained an unincorporated community until 1975 when it became part of East Brunswick Township.
