The town was platted in 1814 and named for General George Washington's home on the Monmouth River. The first inhabitants of North Arlington were Dutch settlers who arrived via boat in 1664. In 1814, a group of Englishmen also settled here and named it after Lord Northampton because they had recently become British subjects. In 1838, John Gwynn built what became known as Gwynn's Mills on the east side of creek that flows through the town center. This saw some heavy industry during the early days of township development; mills include Winton (1870), Haddon Heights (1875), and Southwick (1900). By 1860, all these industries had been closed down due to competition from automated machines or other technological advances. However, Gwynn's Mills still remains an important landmark in North Arlington today as it is one of only two remaining mills left standing in Middlesex County from those years. During World War II, many people from North Arlington enlisted in the military or served abroad. Many residents are descended from these soldiers and their families who live in communities all over America today including Dover Township and Wilmington Delaware

The borough suffered from municipal bankruptcy in 2009 and reverted to its prior form of government on March 14th of that year. North Arlington's rich history goes back to colonial times when Native Americans were present in the area. In 1675, English settlers arrived in what is now North Arlington Township and soon founded two villages: Greenbelt and East Brunswick. One hundred years later, there were over twenty villages located within what is now North Arlington Borough including West Chester Township which merged with Burlington on January 1st of 1912 thanks to an act by then-Governor Woodrow Wilson during his first term as president. The post office at North Arlington was established on September 2nd of 1798 and named for Colonel John Armstrong who had fought with General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Colonel Armstrong had moved from Virginia to open up new land west of Philadelphia where he built a farm known today as Armstrong’s Mills (today part of Old Bridge). He died childless in 1802 so his heirs donated the land east of their farmstead to be formed into what would become North Arlington Township. In 1864, when Burlington became la
