North Arlington, New Jersey is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. North Arlington is part of the Camden-NJ-Hudson Area and is bordered by Camden to the north, Belleville to the east, Brick Township to the south and Weehawken to the west. The community was founded in 1795 as a tavern called "Apostle's Hall". In 1808 it became known as "North Arlington" after General George Washington's plantation in Virginia. It was chartered on May 6, 1847 as a village by an act of Congress. The name change came about because of its location near Princeton University which then had a large number of students from New Jersey. In 1830 North Arlington became part of Bergen County and since then has been governed by Borough Councils with one Mayor per borough until 1984 when it became a full-time municipality with two Mayor/Council members. In February 2009 North Arlington voters passed a referendum that established Township status for the town as well as giving all residents voting rights regardless of borough status. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of ; (1) 0% is land and (2) 100% is water.

North Arlington is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,811 at the 2010 census. North Arlington is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of North Arlington developed on the site of what is now the intersection of Middlesex and Union Streets in 1856 as part of a plan to create a planned community called "The Village". In 1951, the name was changed to North Arlington after incorporation into Bergen County. The first settler in what would become North Arlington was George Hammond who arrived in 1827 from England. Hammond set up a small mill on the former site of what is now Ayer Street and Main Street. By 1830, he had built a house and five outbuildings on present-day First Avenue and Third Street. Hammond's descendants continued to live in North Arlington until 1945 when it became an independent municipality under New Jersey law (Parsons v Boardwalk). In 1855, John Fenton bought land near where Pascack Hills now stands for $10 per acre (the equivalent of $ today). On December 15 that year, he erected a cabin at what is now First Avenue and Third Street for his wife Susannah Fenton; their two children;and their dog Orpheus. That same year, Samuel Richardson established himself as proprietor of Richardson's Tavern which stood on present-day Second Avenue betweenThird and Fourth Streets. It was here that Richardson met his future wife Catherine Morland who traveled with him from London to meet him there before her father could forbid it. In 1861, purchase by Richardson's heirs led to establishment by Richardson's son Amos Richards of Richards' Store which stood at First Avenue between Third and Fourth Streetsnorthwest corner thence west along Uniondale Roadsteads westward until it reachethpresent day Fourth StreetErected 1880 In 1865, property northwest corner thence east along Uniondale Roadsteads southwesterly unto Trenton reached by way of Weehawken Creek acquired by Richard Ayer Jr., grandsonof Amos Richards ThenamesakesakeofAyersStore OnMay 12th 1870 UNIONDALE ROAD WAS CONNECTED TO THE TOWN BY WAY OF A WEEHAWKEN CREEK BUILDING MUNICIPALITY PLANS AND ITS NAME WAS CHANGED TO NORTH ARlington AFTER INCorporation BY THE PEOPLE OF NORTH ARlington BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO REPRESENT THE VILLAGE IN COURT SEEKING ADDITIONAL SERVICES FROM IT . IN 1896 NEW JERSEY CODE ENACTED PROVIDING FOR ANNUAL ELECTIONS TO BE held IN NORTH ARlington SO THAT THE PUBLIC MAY VOTE ON ALL QUESTIONS CONCERNING ITS GOVERNMENT . NOW THOSE ELECTIONS ARE HELD EVERY TWO YEARS AS PART OFTHE GENERAL ASSEMBLY .
The area that is now North Arlington was in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The first European settlers in the area were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1636. In 1764, the British conquered and then ceded what is now Jersey City to the Continental United States, so North Arlington became part of New York City. In 1814, Ohioan George Washington was elected President of the United States and North Arlington became a part of Indiana Territory. In 1837, it became a part of Michigan Territory. In 1861, it was merged into Pennsylvania Territory as part of the state's admission to the Union. After World War II ended, North Arlington became an Indian Reserve and served as such until 1957 when it reverted back to its original status as a town within Middlesex County.
