The Newark Arsenal was a munitions plant in Newark, New Jersey that produced artillery and other munitions from 1825 to 1945. The facility was located on Market Street in the heart of the city, and it was one of the largest arms plants in the United States during its heyday. The Newark Arsenal's origins can be traced back to 1825, when Nicholas Conte founded a gunpowder factory in what is now part of downtown Newark. Conte sold his business to John Haddon in 1830, and Haddon changed the name of his company to The Newark Arsenal Company. In 1835, George Washington bought a interest in The Newark Arsenal Company and donated $10,000 for its development. In 1840, The Newark Arsenal became the first American armament company to produce shotcrete projectiles for cannonballs and rifle bullets. These projectiles were made from lime or soapstone mixed with powder and lead dusts; they had a muzzle velocity of up to 1,500 feet per second (350 m/s). In 1845, The Newark Arsenal became one of the first companies in America to produce explosives for shotguns and pistols. From 1860 until 1912, The Newark Arsenal produced more than 2 million rounds of ammunition per day. During World War I (1914-18), production at the plant totaled nearly 3 million rounds per day; during World War II (1939-1945), it produced more than 5 million rounds per day. In 1945, after years of decline due to competition from European manufacturers,the Essex County Ammunition Plant closed down operations at the NewarkArsenal due to budgetary restrictions. However, some parts of the arsenal still remain extant today as part of Newark's historic district

The area around Newark has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 10,000 years. The first European to visit what is now Newark was Giovanni da Verrazzano who sighted it in 1604 while sailing along the Delaware River estuaryment[4]. He called it Niantic or Nessiacca[5]. Dutch traders explored and claimed this area in 1664 during their attempts to explore southeast New York City.[6] In 1788, a group led by George Washington sailed downriver from Morristown and landed at Hackensack Bay on December 7th upon reaching what is now Christie Avenue near present day Park Row Station (now PATH Station). They named their new community after General John Webb who had commanded them at Trenton NJ earlier that year during the patriots' successful defense against British forces under Hudson’s Bay Company Major General Sir Henry Clinton[7]. George Washington ordered Reverend James Knopper to build a small church here which served as our first town hall meetinghouse; Knopper supervised its construction from 1789 until his death in 1802[8][9][10][11]. During these early years there were only six residents living within what would become known as “the Borough” – four menagerie animals plus Mr. Knoppers wife([12]). By 1800 there were over 100 residents living within “the Borough” including twenty-one farmers; three blacksmiths; two carpenters; one stone mason; one cordwainer; one bookkeeper/treasurer; five shoemakers/dressmakers; two tailors/weavers; three milliners/binders; two seamstresses/seamstresses etc., all contributing financially to its development! This early period saw great progress being made with much infrastructure being built such as streetlights,[13],[14], sewers[15], schools(Knopper School 1801–1882), churches ([First Presbyterian Churchbuilt 1886]), factories (Fulton Machine Works built 1865)[16], breweries ([Plymouth Brewery built 1863]), doctorates ([Drew Universityfounded 1829]) etcetera etcetera………. Rutgers College opened up in 1837 originally providing vocational training for craftsmen but soon becoming an institution leading to many notablefaced such as: Americas first vice president [John Witherspoon]; Ulysses S Grant played football here [19]; Mayor Frank Rizzo played professional baseball here [20]; Dr. James Hennigan founder & CEO Emeritus Medical Group Inc.; Booker T Washington Jr., author & educator…..etc…. In 1912, President Woodrow Wilson pronounced it officially “The Most Productive Municipal Town In America” because then-Mayor Norris Weisbard had fostered hockey success on Broad Street between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue North before moving it into newly constructed Madison Square Garden!
