A group of citizens petitioned for a township to be established on their land which became known as Napehtown Township (now part of Caldwell). The first store opened in 1825 and by 1830 there were six stores and one blacksmith shop operating within the township limits. In 1832, Abraham Lincoln visited Ansonia before heading upriver on his journey across America that would lead him into history as president of the United States In 1854, steamboats brought goods downriver from Newark Bay through what is now called Clearwater Creek until they reached Morristown where they were unloaded onto barges which then transported goods upriver to Newark Bay again until they reached Princeton where they were unloaded onto boats which returned home empty During this time period an canal was built linking Newark Bay with Princeton via Clearwater Creek so that goods could be shipped directly from Newark Bay instead of having to go through Morristown or Princeton. The first European settlement in what is now New Providence was founded by Major General George Washington on December 4, 1764, as Fort Duensing near what is now South Brunswick Township. Washington named it after his patron saint, the Virgin Mary, and commissioned Surveyor general James Hamilton to build a road between Philadelphia and Newark so settlers could reach him more easily. The town's first store opened on September 12, 1765; its first mayor was John Dickinson (1725-1776). After the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War on October 20th, 1783, Fort Duensing reverted back to British hands until ceded back to America by Great Britain in 1800 pursuant to the Treaty of Utrecht which ended Dutch control over North America east of Hudson’s Bay

In 1765, George Washington became President of the United States and in 1766, he issued a proclamation establishing New Jersey as part of America.
