Scope mounts have been a common sight in New Providence, NJ for over sixty years. The first expansion of the New Providence township was in 1702 when thejonathan Weems and his family purchased what is now known as Spring Garden from the Native American tribe of Lenape. The Weems were a Dutch family who had originated in Holland. They renamed their property “New Providence” after their new home, which they built on a peninsula in Mud Creek Township. In 1836, James Kapp bought the land that makes up today's New Providence from George Stevens. He also acquired the rights to build a canal through the township. This canal would later be called the New Jersey Turnpike. In 1849, Samuel Smeaton purchased some of Kapp's land and developed it into what is now Plainfield Township. In 1868, John Pomeroy acquired some of Kapp's land and developed it into what is now East Brunswick Township. In 1896, Albert Bogan purchased some of Kapp's land and developed it into what is now Bloomfield Township. In 1912, Edwin Hickey bought part of Kapp's land and development it into what is now Freehold Borough. In 1922, Philip Jelinek purchased part of Kapp's land and development it into what is now Hillsborough Township
New Providence, NJ is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of the borough and its only municipality. New Providence was founded as a small hamlet on the east bank of Raritan River in 1784 by colonists who were fleeing British tyranny. The hamlet grew rapidly and by 1814 it had a population of 1,100 people. In 1868, the boundaries of present-day Morris Township were drawn along Raritan Creek and part of what is now New Providence was annexed to that township. In 1905, an act were passed giving approval for incorporation as a borough by referendum; this became effective on October 15th that year. On November 3rd of that year, polling began for Mayor and Council Members with ballots being cast for both positions open until 11pm EST; results showed that George D’Angelo (D), John Murchison (I), Emanuel Jaffe (H) and Henry Pillsbury (R) were all elected mayor and First Vice President respectively. The borough's first president was William Fenton who served from 1898-1900; he also served as Borough Treasurer from 1903-1906 and Borough Clerk from 1912-1915. On July 14th 1907 James Hickey purchased 5 acres in what would eventually become known as Easton Square from Mr Laughlin for $2 per acre which made New Providence one of the most expensive towns to settle in America at the time due to its location on top of a hill accessible only through 2 miles wide valley bottom with no water source other than a series of brooks running through it - making irrigation very difficult without prior permission or investment from those owning land within the town limits! The original square consisted of 4 blocks measuring 40 feet by 30 feet each side with 6 benches inside each block – making it one large field used by villagers for public meetings & activities such as religious services etc before they dispersed into their homes around town during business hours so their families could continue attending services outside during quieter hours! In 1935 when Morristown Municipal Court moved to Morristown then northside new jersey Mrs Katherine Fitzpatrick donated her home next door on Maple Street which became known as “Fitzpatrick”s House after her daughter Katherine married James Hickey Jr who lived there until his death in 1984!
