New Providence, NJ is a small town on the Delaware River in New Jersey. It was founded by English colonists in 1638 and became known as a center of shipping and optical industry. New Providence was once a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, that has since been annexed into the city of Newark. The community is located on the banks of the Hackensack River and is home to over 1,000 residents. The name "New Providence" first appeared in 1664 as part of a grant from England to Sir George Carteret for his founding of the colony at Newark. In 1714, when New Jersey was divided between Great Britain and France, New Providence became part of French West Indies. After the French were defeated by British forces in 1759, New Providence reverted back to English control until it was taken by American forces during the Revolutionary War. Many people who lived there during this time came from what is now East Orange and Paterson. In 1831, New Providence was incorporated as a borough within Newark and remained an Independent municipality until 1947 when it became part of the new City of Newark under Mayor James Buchanan. Today, many businesses in New Providence are still run by descendants of those who founded them centuries ago. This includes such iconic institutions as The Brickyard Saloon & Grille (founded in 1817), which still serves its extensive breakfast menu today; The Old Dutch School (which opened in 1855); and First Presbyterian Church (built in 1792). Additionally, much modern infrastructure has been built here such as First United Methodist Church (opened in 1984), Rutgers University's Hoboken Campus (opened in 2001), and Municipal Court Building (opened in 1975). Some notable landmarks that have since disappeared include Stroud's Dance Hall (closed down 1961) and Canonsburg Cemetery (closed down 1950). The borough's rich history also makes for an interesting backdrop to its more recent development; for example, construction began on Rutgers' Hoboken Campus only months after NJ Transit opened its new station here. Similarly, while other parts of Newark have seen explosive growth over recent decades – such as South Ward – Little Italy retains a significant presence throughout many blocks near Borough Hall: merchants continue to sell Italian-themed food products from their storefronts even onto Broad Street near State Street!

However, during the American Revolution (1776-83), New Providence sided with Great Britain againstthe United States. In 1783, it was burned by rebels following their victory over American forces at Saratoga Springs. Afterward, New Providence declined as a commercial center and lost its importance as a political powerhouse. Nevertheless, it remains an interesting place to visit today due to its diverse architecture and history
On July 29, 1764, a group of Loyalists led by Silas Deane arrived in New Providence. They were looking for a new home after their homes in Pennsylvania were destroyed during the American Revolution. The town was founded on the former site of an Indian settlement that had been abandoned by the Indians. The first settlers were mostly men who worked as farmers or merchants. Over time, the town grew and became known for its quality produce and itschurches which remain operational to this day.
