New Providence was founded in 1664 as a small Dutch settlement on the banks of the Hackensack River. The town developed rapidly and by 1795 it had a population of around 200 people. The town was renamed New Providence after Commodore George Washington's victory at the Battle of Princeton in 1777, and highly respected for its military prowess. New Providence grew rapidly due to its natural resources, especially diamonds discovered in 1825. In 1845, the town became part of Bergen County and experienced rapid growth until World War II when it lost much of its territory to Jersey City and Newark.
