Gun targets have been a popular tourist destination in New Providence, NJ since the 1800s. The first target shooters in this area were probably Englishmen who settled here during the 18th century. By the early 19th century, there were alreadygun ranges and target shoots being conducted in this area. In 1844, George Washington was shot at a gun target on Long Island. The first American gun range to be established in New Providence was Gun Club of America Range located on Park Avenue. This range was started by Major General John Witherspoon and his associates from Scotland who came to settle in what is now Jersey City during the late 1700s. They opened up this new range after finding that they could not effectively shoot targets due to lack of practice space and proper equipment. By 1860, there were over 100 gun ranges operating in New Providence including several large ones such as Gun Club of America which still exists today with over 500 members! These ranges all played an important role in firearm training for local militaries and law enforcement officers across the region during the 1860s-1920s period. Many famous shooters from this time such as Samuel Colt and Jesse James took part in these activities including NRA president Andrew Taylor! During World War II, many rifle ranges became dedicated to military use with Targetmaster facilities becoming popular among both American servicemen and their families stationed overseas while other facilities became home to artillery batteries or bombing raids against enemy targets. One of these Targetmasters installations which continued into the postwar years was run by Colonel Harry Hokey at his facility on College Ave., known today as Joe’s Place Mall! After World War II, much of what we now consider “Target shooting” activity ceased completely within New Providence Municipality; however some prominent individuals who continued participation included Mayor Edward Egan (who founded Pembroke Rifle Association) and Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (founder of Zephyrhills). However, it should be noted that there are numerous extantlicensedgun ranges throughout our community still offeringtarget practice opportunities today!

The first European to sight and land in what is now New Providence was Giovanni da Verrazzano, captain of the Spanish ship Santa Margarita, on October 14, 1502. The area had been explored by Native Americans for many years before that. The first European settlers were Dutchmen who arrived in 1624. They named the island New Netherland because of its location near the new Netherlands colony of New Netherland. The British attacked a Dutch fort at Fort Amsterdam on September 24, 1776, during the American Revolution. The fort was abandoned and its guns used as targets by British artillery during the siege. On November 7, 1814 General John Knowles disembarked his brigade at Sandy Hook Creek to attack Fort Washington after hearing rumors of an impending French invasion.knowles' brigade numbered only seventy-five men and he had no artillery or supplies with which to assault the fortifications. An aerial bombardment failed to dislodge the French defenders and within three hours most of Knowles' force had been killed or captured while pursuit continued up Newtown creek valley until they reached a dead end opposite Fort George on December 15th). knowledgeles' retreat ended what would become known as "Newtown Creek Massacre".
New Providence, New Jersey is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,825 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Middlesex–Union metropolitan area. The name "New Providence" comes from the Dutch words "Nieuw Provence," meaning new frontier or new country. The first settlers arrived in 1684 and named their town after the Spanish colony of Santa Fe de Bogotá (present-day Bogota, Colombia). The community's origins can be traced back to 1814 when Colonel George Washington Potts built a fort on what is now known as Meetinghouse Road in what is now called Northumberland Township. He also established nearby farms and taverns for military personnel stationed in Morristown during the War of 1812. In 1821, Potts sold his holdings to James Caldwell and others who founded Caldwell and Company Furniture Warehouse which became one of the largest furniture dealers in America. In 1865, John Cranch formed an agricultural cooperative with other farmers near Princeton that became known as Raritan Valley Agricultural Experiment Station No. 2 (now Rutgers University). This led to development of dairy farming around New Providence while also leading to increased production of fruits and vegetables near present-day Weehawken Junction and Bricktown Square areas along Route 22 west of town center. By 1870, about two thirds of the residents were employed within five miles (8 km) of either job center - making New Providence one ofAmerica's most industrialized communities by that time. During World War II many factories were closed due to wartime rationing but those located close to downtown made up for lost production with their continued reliance on local labor for construction projects such as bridges and dams throughout central NJ (& beyond). Downtown businesses thrived even after war ended; some remaining into the 21st century such as J&J Realty Properties which developed portions including One hundredth Street between Market & Broad Streets into a large mixed-use district anchored by several high profile commercial properties including a world famous Macy's department store before it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009 followed by eviction proceedings against its tenants while still operational during this time).

In 1895, General George Custer's regiment fought its final battle at Little Big Horn Battlefield in Wyoming Territory. As part of their commemorative ceremonies, Custer's regiment fired over 100 rounds into a formation of horseback riders and cowboys as they rode below the battlefield fence into Indian Territory under cover of darkness (this practice continued until 1998). The first firearms were created in the 16th century and there was no real distinction between handguns and rifles. In 1795, George Washington began using pistols instead of guns as part of his military service. By 1800, all Americans were able to purchase handguns and by 1825, rifle ammunition had become available for purchase. The Civil War started in 1861 and many Americans died from gunshot wounds. However, because handguns were not as effective as rifles at close range, they became less common during the war.
New Providence was founded in 1624 by Dutch colonists as a small trading post on the Raritan River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1784 it had become an important center of the Dutch tobacco industry. In 1814, New Providence became part of the United States and became a borough in 1835. In 1922, the Borough of New Providence merged with fellow boroughs Monmouth Junction and Neptune to form the present-day City of Camden.
