New Providence is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,514. It is the second most populous municipality in Mercer County after Middletown and the third most populous municipality in New Jersey after Trenton and Newark. In addition to being one of the five municipalities that make up The Township of Paterson, it also forms part of Raritan Township. The first Europeans to set foot on what is now New Providence were Dutch traders who sailed into the area in 1624. The first permanent settler was Nicholas de Boer who arrived from Holland in 1638. He established a farm on the eastern side of Mount Hope Island which became known as "Boer's Fort." Other early settlers included Pieter de la Garde (1646-1713), Abraham Ortelius (1582-1655), Johannes Cramer (1660-1725) and Isaac Brock (1718-1791). The township was formed on February 20, 1814 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature following split off from Monmouth County. The township was named for Peter Minuit, an Englishman who had founded Long Branch on Staten Island in 1583 and developed it into a commercial center with fur trading operations. At its creation, NJ 27 ran through present day downtown New Providence; however this road has been renamed Broad Street since its original designation served only as a main artery within Morris County carrying mail between Paterson and Middlesex County On October 14th 1776 during America's Revolutionary War Battle of Princeton Battlefield by order of General George Washington overdeployed militia forces under command Major General Samuel Ogden against Hessian troops commanded by Johann Friedrich von Kappenauer near Princeton Junction - resulting in heavy losses for both sides but enabling Washington to claim credit for victory - this site became known as "Princeton" or "Unter der Lippe" meaning under the hill west of where Ironton Road currently stands

New Providence, a borough in New Jersey, was chartered on November 1, 1788. It became the seat of the first territorial government of what would become New Jersey. The town was named for Sir Francis Drake and his flagship HMS "Drake" which was anchored off the coast. On January 2, 1789, the first meeting of the township's governing body took place at this location to establish its rules and procedures. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the banks of the Hackensack River. By 1800, it had a population of around 350 people. In 1807-1808, during America's War with France, New Providence supplied troops and supplies for General James Ketchum's campaign against French forces in North America. In 1814-1815, during King George III's War with France (the American Revolutionary War), New Providence played an important role in helping supply British troops fighting in Canada and Quebec. In 1828-1829, following Reconstruction in America after the Civil War ended white supremacy and slavery, many African Americans began to arrive in New Providence from southern states looking for new opportunities. This influx led to increased social tensions within the town as well as between black residents and white ones; however, these tensions ultimately dissipated over time. On July 1st 1870 (or July 11th according to some sources), New Providence became part of Union County when that county was created from portions of Middlesex County.. For more than two hundred years since its founding as a boroughs – both before it became a municipality – New Providence has been home to people from all walks of life who have worked together towards common goals: building strong relationships with our neighbors while continuing serve our local community’s needs through civic engagement... We are grateful for this history that has shaped us into who we are today!
Homes in New Providence were built as early as 1724. The town was first settled by Dutch colonists and named Nieuw-Providence after the new province of New Jersey. In 1838, a post office was established in the town, and it would remain operational until 1932. New Providence was incorporated as a borough on May 20, 1909. On July 14, 1920, the Borough of New Providence merged with the adjacent borough of Rahway to form the city of Rahway. The merger was approved by voters and took place without incident. On October 15, 1928, Hurricane Donahue caused extensive damage to parts of Rahway and New Providence. More than $2 million worth of damage was inflicted upon both towns while over 1,500 homes were destroyed or damaged in total. The damages were so great that much reconstruction had to take place before things could really get back on track for both towns. Aftermath included new streets being laid out and a brand new library being built in New Providence - all while still keeping many old buildings standing around town (including some that date back to colonial days). Today, there are several heritage-listed buildings located within New Providence proper andadjacent areas including Rahway Park & Garden; Stonington Landing; Parsonage Estate; Mount Hope Cemetery; Christiana House; Saint John's Episcopal Church; Kinderhook Chapel & School chapel; First Presbyterian Church & school annexe; School Building No 2 (now home to Excelsior Township Library); East Side Baptist Churches: Crossroads Evangelical Baptist Church (1890), First Baptist Community Church (1910), Second Baptist Community Church (1920), Third Baptist CommunityChurch (1930), Midtown BaptistChurch(1960) - all original congregations since disbanded or have since been replaced by newer churches or denominations
