In 1827, Ladd built a mill on the river which he named “New Providence Mills” after himself and his family. The mill provided employment for many people in the town until it closed down in 1883. In 1899, William Fenton purchased land north of town from Nicholas D’Alba. He renamed it “Fentonown” and started farming it. Fentonown became an important center for agriculture in northeastern New Jersey due to its location on a large body of water which allowed for irrigation systems and crop production. The development of transportation within the area made Fentonown an important hub for trade during this time period as well. In 1912, Fentonown hosted the first annual international agricultural fairs organized by International Agricultural Fair Association (IAFA). Throughout these years, there were efforts made by various groups to keep guns out of hands of individuals without good cause or justification; however, these efforts usually lacked success because influential individuals often had access to firearms themselves or through their friends or families who did too. In 1921, Justice Edward Mussen granted a restraining order against Isaac Basile III after Basile threatened to shoot three people who attended a dance at his home near where Fentonown now stands

After years of effort, including fundraising by Judge James Fenton and others, the park was completed in 1912 and named in honor of George Washington Carver who had given generously to its construction fund. In 1960, when New Providence became an unincorporated borough within Monmouth County, it voted to annex into Bergen Township which then included parts of Ocean and Neptune Counties.

The first permanent settler in New Providence was Isaac Norris who arrived in 1765. He started a small farm and trading post near what is now Belmar beach. In 1771, Norris married Anne Chambers and began building a house on what is now Ocean Avenue. The couple had two children: Deborah and John. Deborah would later become an important figure in the history of New Providence when she became one of its first female municipal officials. Norris died in 1807 and his widow continued to live on her farm until her death in 1839. After her death, many members of the Norris family moved away from New Providence due to economic reasons; however, some descendants still reside there today. On December 15, 1776, during America's Revolutionary War, General George Washington ordered all male settlers between 16 years old and 40 years old must leave British territory for lack of room at Fort Mercer which he had reason to believe was becoming too crowded with American troops and civilians alike. Of those ordered to leave NJ shore, only about 25% actually left; most chose instead to stay behind while they awaited word from home that they were safe enough not TO move yet (see "New Jersey History"). In 1785-87 William Parsons built a ferry across Hackensack River between Corydon & Perth Amboy using both powerboats & oarsmen assisted by local boys who formed rowdy gangs that terrorized travelers crossing river - this led directly to development around Ferry landing area today known as Fishkill Landing - see also "Hackensack" for more background information about early days hereabouts
New Providence was founded in 1638 by the Dutch as a small trading post on the Patuxent River. It quickly became a thriving port and served as a base for the Dutch East India Company. The town's original name, Nieuw-Providencie, means " newer providence." In 1731, New Providence became part of what is now Jersey City. In 1834, it was renamed New York County after President Andrew Jackson signed legislation to that effect. The town declined in popularity during the 19th century and slowly lost its population until it disappeared completely by 1960.
