New Providence, New Jersey is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,827 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southernmost edge of the downtownPassaic Valley and is bordered to the east by Paterson and to the west by Hackensack. The area that now makes up New Providence was first settled in 1664 as part of Bergen Township by Dutch colonists from Paramus, NJ. The town was officially founded on December 15th, 1788 when it became a part of Princeton Township after Princeton College moved from Newark to what is now Princeton Junction. In 1834, the township was reorganized into two sections: North and South Side. On May 1st of that year, South Side became part of new Union City while North Side remained within North Side Township until 1892 when it merged with Hamilton Township to form Passaic County. In 1925, when Passaic County formed its present boundaries, New Providence was included within it as well as Hackensack and Paterson which had all become incorporated municipalities since then. In 1933, during World War II (the second world war), President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9102 creatingeight military training areas in what are now eight municipalities – five in Passaic County (north side), four in Union City (south side), one each in Rutherford and Teaneck (central section), one each in Mount Olivet and Westwood (northern section) – making New Providence one of only two townships statewide not exempted from military service; all other townships were required to garrison their own militaries under National Guard or Marines commands. As can be expected with an increasing number of civilians living near large military installations such as Naval Base Manhattan Terminal Island/Fort Lee or Fort Dix Ammunition Plant/West Deptford Heights these days there has been some increase in crime rates outside those zones but overall life remains relatively safe for most people despite occasional bursts of violence here and there throughout history especially given how close many things are here to major metropolitan areas like NYC etcetera
New Providence was founded in 1664 by English colonists as a trading post on the Delaware River. The town grew rapidly and by 1785 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1814, the town was renamed New Providence township after General James K. Polk, who had served in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1874, the township became part of Middlesex County and was annexed by Jersey City in 1965.
