New Providence is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now New Providence was Giovanni Pennacchio on July 14, 1614. The area that would become New Providence was first settled by Germans and Dutch colonists who founded a farmstead called "Nieuw Amstel" (New Amsterdam) on the south bank of the Raritan River. In 1709, the British annexed what is now Mercer County and renamed it West Jersey after their colony in North America. On November 12, 1764, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington ordered all British forces to leave West Jersey because they were incompatible with American principles of independence. In 1831, when section 10 of Township 11 north of Township 12 became part of newly created North Ward within Hudson County following its creation from parts of Monmouth and Middlesex Counties following Congressional approval of an act entitled "An Act for Apportioning Lands among certain Persons," portions of present-day South Ward also became part of North Ward as a result. President James Kapp stereographically projected his plan for building a railroad through Camden into South Ward on September 29th1835 while he was living in office at Government House; this relocation caused severe damage to many homes in South Ward adjacent to the tracks which remain today as evidence of how close Camden had come to becoming a city under Kapp's plan. On December 4th 1836 portions that comprise present-day East Brunswick Township were added to North Ward as well along with Elizabethtown Heights and other villages eastward from Bound Brook Road including Sayreville where settlers had arrived primarily from Ulster County refugees fleeing religious persecution back home in Ireland during the Great Famine Years (1845–48). By 1840 there were over 1,000 residents living in what would become New Providence and it remained an unincorporated community until 1955 when it became part OfMercerCountyNJ under statehood legislation granted by then Governor Robert Hughes The township’s name originated with two grants made by George Washington: one giving him land on Broad Street between Delaware Avenue and Route 9W; another providing him 100 acres along Hackensack Creek between State Highway 2A (now US 1) and Delaware Avenue nearpresent-day Union Station This grant included an area known today as Mount Vernon Square which extended from Broad Street northerly to Market Street eastward across Harrison Boulevard before turning northwest toward Hicks Mill Road . This grant also included sections lying west sideofthe aforementioned square including much later Mount Morris Park which lay just south of present day Trenton Avenue across Baldwin Highway

New Providence was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States until the early 19th century. The settlement was founded by John Nicholson in 1764. It grew rapidly due to its location on the tidal creek known as the Raritan and its coal resources. In 1778, Nicholas's grandson John Nicholson III erected a frame addition to his father's old home at present-day North Brunswick Township in order to accommodate growing families. The family name had been gradually dropped from the community for many years before being replaced by Robbins in 1881. The town prospered through the first two centuries of its existence, thanks largely to its strategic location on the Raritan River and its abundant natural resources. By 1800, however, New Providence was under pressure from more populous communities downstream and it failed to keep up with the trend of growth in those days. In 1814, local residents voted to incorporated as a municipality; but it wasn't until 1830 that they succeeded in attracting settlers who would make their homes there throughout most of that period. During World War II, New Providence played an important role as one of over 50 wartime airfields used by American Air Force pilots flying out of nearby Bordentown Airport. In recent decades, much redevelopment has taken place within New Providence proper: Aspen Pointe Shopping Center opened in 2007; Garden State Racetrack opened in 2009; and Webster Commons apartment complex opened in 2010. In November 2011, PNC Bank announced plans for an $800 million expansion and renovation project which will include new building jobs at the site; this is expected to bring about significant economic development to the town during 2013-2020 alone
New Providence was founded in 1686 by the Dutch. The town grew rapidly, and by 1730 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1764, the English took over New Providence and renamed it North Bergen. It remained an English town until 1834 when it became a part of the United States of America.
