In the year 1755, a British Royal Navy ship, HMS Dolphin, anchored in what is now New Providence Township. The local Native American tribe, the Lenape, had been living in and around the township for centuries. The dolphins were used as a means of signaling to other ships and sailors. The British Naval Officer on board HMS Dolphin noticed that there was an abundance of berry bushes around the island and decided to take some berries himself. He named one of the bushes "New Providence." Later in 1755, Captain John Smith sailed his vessel Discovery into what is now New Providence Township. He was looking for a new place to build his colony after being forced out of Jamestown by the English in 1607. Captain Smith's group discovered large reserves of natural resources (coal, iron ore) on Long Island Sound and decided to settle there permanently.
New Providence was founded in 1665 by the Dutch and Swedes, near present-day Trenton, New Jersey. It became a separate British colony in 1784. The area now known as New Providence was first part of Burlington County,NJ. In 1832, it became part of Monmouth County. In 1838, it became a part of Ocean County. New Providence is an unincorporated community located in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, NJ. The population was 712 at the 2000 census. It is located on the Delaware River between Bear Garden Township and Westville Township to the north and Neptune Township to the east. The village of New Providence had a post office from 1784 until 1830; however, it only served residents of Monmouthshire Township to the south and west (and not those living in adjacent Neptune Township). Beginning on 10/1/1830, all mail for both villages passed through Trenton into New Providence through First State Bank & Trust Company until 9/30/1850 when United States Post Office moved to Princeton Junction due to fire damage done by riots taking place there during the Mexican American War that year (Postmaster General Gideon Welles ordered that all mail be sent via Trenton because “the public would then have one point of reference against which they could measure our proceedings…”). In 1850, the new Princeton Junction post office opened with its own building replacing first state bank's original structure which burned down two years earlier while being used as a warehouse for goods destined for Mexico City during the war. For many years after this event local farmers delivered their produce directly to Newark Penn Station where railroads brought it southward across America awaiting shipment back home or storage in ports along the East Coast before being exported overseas again. However freight rates began rising rapidly following World War II so grain shipments were shifted inland again starting in 1951 becoming one of Newark Penn Station's most lucrative businesses until its closure in 1995 due to industry changes including more container shipping passing throughNJ waters making transportation cheaper than ever before…. Today you can still find small farmers bringing their products upriver every day from Bear Garden Twp.,Westville Township.,to Neptune Twp.,loading them onto cars at Trumpfords Bridge Rd., just downriver from where I stand today!
