New Providence is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now New Providence was Nicholas Penniman from England in 1686. The Dutch and Swedes also had settlements there early on. The area became a part of British America after the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolution in 1783. In 1814, when President James K. Polk issued Executive Order No. 11 (named for General Andrew Johnson), which ordered all military posts throughout the United States to be abolished except for Fort Fisher and Washington's Island, New Providence was one of those locations ordereered by Polk as an exception because it lay within his jurisdiction as Commander-in-Chief of all American forces stationed in South Carolina and Georgia at that time (Johnson had been assassinated just two weeks before). During World War II, many Japanese Americans were incarcerated at Fort Drancy near Philadelphia while their homes were being built nearby as part of Project Paperclip; during this time New Providence residents subscribed to a local paper campaign to try and stop construction until their loved ones could be reunited with them again postwar. In 1945, most Japanese Americans living inPhiladelphia were finally released following World War II without ever having to leave their homes or faces any reprisals from the U.S.. After years of growth due mostly to suburban development around Interstate 95 (I-95A) between Newark Liberty International Airport and Trenton Township outside town Limits - creating what is now known as "the I-95 corridor" - annexed by neighboring township Upper Merion Township on January 1st 1997 - much discussion has taken place over plans for redevelopment/use/alteration thereof given that current zoning limitsresidential buildings downwind only 825 feet (.291 miles) MEANINGLESS TOWNSHIP WIDE AREA OF NEW PROVIDENCE IS NOW LESS THAN HALF A MILE LONG BY ABOUT TWO MILES WIDE
