The town of New Milford was founded in 1798 by Captain John Montresor and his family. The population of the town increased rapidly during the early 1800s, reaching a peak of over 1000 people in 1812. However, the progress of technology and economic development led to a decline in population throughout the 19th century. In 1907, New Milford was annexed by Plainfield Township.
