New Milford, New Jersey is a small town located in the southern part of New Jersey. The town was founded in 1714 by Captain John Ratcliffe and settlers from Connecticut. The first settler to arrive in what is now New Milford was Nicholas Fenton who arrived on July 14, 1714. By the end of the eighteenth century, there were over 1,000 people living in New Milford. In 1834, the village of Northfield was incorporated into New Milford and it remained an independent municipality until 1947 when it became a part of Morris County. The town has experienced many changes throughout its history including being annexed by Philadelphia in 1854, becoming a borough in 1917 (after being passed through several municipal bankruptcies), becoming a city in 1950 (after winning approval from the state government), and finally becoming a township within Morris County after winning approval from the Township Board on November 3, 2009. One of the most significant events that took place within New Milford's history is the Battle of Saratoga which took place on September 11th, 1862 during American Civil War. Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant attacked Confederate troops entrenched at Pleasant Valley Farm near Chester Heights overlooking Saratoga Springs; however, despite inflicting considerable damage upon their opponents, Union forces were eventually forced to retreat due to severe losses and lack of ammunition. This battle marked one of America's largest military successes during the war and helped pave way for victory at Gettysburg four months later. Today, much like back then, life revolves around culture and community service; as such it can be difficult to determine just how extensive or influential these various endeavors may have been within our municipality’s overall history. Nevertheless, through commemoration ceremonies honoring past individuals or communities associated with economic development or patriotic values – both local and national – we are able to keep alive all that has made our community unique over time.
In 1764, the area that is now New Milford was part of Monmouth County. In 1824, it became part of Middlesex County. In 1881, it became a township in Middlesex County. On December 14, 1907, it merged with the neighboring town of Perth Amboy to form the new city of New Milford.
