New Milford is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,673 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the Dutch word "new" (nieuw), meaning new or fresh. The first settlers in what is now New Milford were Quakers who arrived in 1670. They were followed by other religious groups over the next hundred years, including Baptists and Methodists. In 1812, John Dickinson moved his family to what is now New Milford after being forced out of Pennsylvania by British troops under General George Washington. Dickinson became an iconic figure for resistance to British rule and for his part in leading the Delaware Valley resistance movement against English efforts to annex that region during the American Revolution. During World War II, many residents of New Milford served in military units such as the 10th Mountain Division and Navy's Sixth Fleet which made it one of only a handful U.S. towns to participate in both world wars. As a result of its wartime experience and proximity to key naval bases, New Milford has been called "the naval capital of America." Today, many businesses located in downtown include shipyards and marine-related industries as well as health care and business services sectors; some examples are Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company (now Bristol-Myers Squibb) and Essex Corporation (now Verizon). In 1951, when New Milford Township was formed from portions of Middlesex County following statehood within the United States, it included much of what is now eastern Long Branch Township along with most of present-day East Brunswick Township except for a small portion south of Route 1 near Bound Brook Park which became part of South Brunswick Township upon official incorporation into Middlesex County on February 12th 1959 The township had 4 square miles (10 km²) total area when incorporated while today its boundaries extend through much more land with a population estimated at 26,500 according to Census Bureau estimates released October 15th 2018

New Milford, New Jersey was a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, from 1812 to 1827. It was consolidated with nearby Perth Amboy and East Brunswick into the new township of Perth Amboy on February 14, 1827. The population of thetown reached 4,752 in 1850. The first settler in New Milford was Nicholas Parsons (1767-1825), who arrived in 1797 and built a cabin on the north side of what is now Route 9 near what is now Route 202. In 1800 he married Mary French (1759-1819), daughter of John French and his wife Sarah Putnam. In 1812 Nicholas Parsons sold his land to Joseph Townsend (1800-1868) for $100 per acre. Townsend built a house on the site and named it "New Milford". He moved his family to the town in 1827 when he purchased 3 acres from George Emerson for $35. The town's first store opened at this site on April 20, 1830. Formal incorporation as a borough took place on November 15, 1837; however, it never grew very large and disbanded two years later due to lack of support from its residents. On February 14, 1847, following consolidation with neighboring Perth Amboy Township there were only 739 residents living in New Milford Borough; however it still remained an important cultural center for its surrounding townships due to its rich history and architecture dating back more than 200 years
New Milford was chartered on October 24, 1788, by the First Dutch Reformed Church in America. It was named for Colonel Nicholas van der Milten, who served as a captain in the New Jersey militia during the American Revolution. The town was originally settled by farmers and their families who were proprietors of land grants. By 1812, the population had increased to about 200 people. In 1814, a schoolhouse and courthouse were built; both remain in use today. In 1870, the first railroad arrived in New Milford; it was called the Trenton & New York Railroad. As more and more people moved to town, businesses grew quickly and prices for goods soared. The development of manufacturing began to take hold during this time; notably, a shoe factory was built in 1892 which continues to operate today. During World War II, local factories produced munitions for the war effort; however, few residents joined forces with military service due to concern over potential joblessness following hostilities. In later years, many new businesses have been established in downtown New Milford including an arts center (the VanDerMilt Museum), several restaurants/bars/cafés/, and an office park that has become home to numerous large companies such as IBM and Verizon Wireless
