The first Europeans to enter what is now New Milford were Dutch settlers in 1626. On November 8, 1792, the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War and then-Governor Nicholas Saratoga granted land to seven families who had evacuated from Rhode Island during that conflict. They named their new settlement after George Washington because he had supported them during the war and they admired his military skills. In 1814, General James Clinton called for volunteers to help him build a road from Princeton through New Milford Township to raise money for his army campaign against Native Americans on the border of Pennsylvania and New York. A group of men from here volunteered and built a road that became known as Clinton Street. In 1825, Anthony Jugan purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land southwest of present-day Main Street from John D’Angelo for $1 per acre (0.24 hectares). He founded Jugan's Mills which became one of America's largest cotton mills until it closed in 1984. On October 25th, 1847, President George Washington delivered an address at Valley Forge Elementary School in which he praised "the perseverance with which our people have borne up under every trial since we arrived here" and announced that there would be a census taken within two years to determine how much more land there was left in what is now Middlesex County so that roads could be built straight through it without duplication or deviation along the way like they were doing with Rhode Island
New Milford was founded in 1764 by John Dickinson and its first settler, Abraham Moody. The town grew rapidly due to the production of woolen fabrics and other goods. In 1814, New Milford became a township, and in 1834 it became a city. The United States Census Bureau counted 1,846 people in New Milford as of 2000. The racial makeup of the population was 96% white, 3% black or African American, 0% Native American, 0% Asian Pacific Islander, 2% from other races, and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6%.
