The land that would eventually become New Milford was first settled by Europeans in 1689 as part of the group known as the Dunkirkers. The settlement grewsteadily during the next few centuries and by 1814 it had a population of about 200 people. In 1828, a post office called "New Milford" was established and remained in operation until 1904. In 1842, development began on what became known as "the Parsonage Estate" around milepost 9 on Long Branch Road (later renamed West Orange Avenue). By 1860, over 1,500 homes had been built on this primarily agricultural estate which included spacious gardens and many contributing trees. During World War II, much of the township was destroyed by Allied bombing raids; however, portions including present-day East Brunswick Township were rebuilt while still remaining within bounds of New Milford limits. On September 15th 1912, Mayor John Fitzgerald delivered his inaugural address to a crowd estimated at 10,000 people at Goodspeed Park in downtown New Milford after being elected to his first term two months earlier. At that time Goodspeed Park consisted of only a small section of what is now Poppleton Square off Grand Street between Market and First Streets NW in downtown Newark; all other areas were undeveloped parkland or fields home to farmers who farmed their land for several hundred years prior to 1912. Fitzgerald's speech highlighted new opportunities offered by railroad construction nearby which he proclaimed would bring “a great change” to the way life would be conducted in Robbinsville and elsewhere near Newark Airport; this vision ultimately came true when passenger trains arrived at Newark Penn Station with associated highway improvements transforming commercial districts into bustling metropolises that continue today
