Many of these businesses did not survive into the 20th century due to competition from state-owned enterprises or industry growth outside of rural towns like New Milford. New Milford, New Jersey is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name "New Milford" was first given to the town by Lieutenant Colonel John Stevens in 1777 during the American Revolution. The township was formed on April 12, 1834 from portions of West Morris Township and Ridgway Township. On November 15, 1847 it became a borough within Morris County. On July 1, 1850 it became an incorporated village when all of Morris County except Bound Brook opted to become villages. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. As of the census[2] of 2000,[3] there were 20,854 people, 8,719 households, and 5,910 families residing in the township; however, according to the 2007 US Census estimate[4], this figure has decreased slightly to 21,095 due primarily to mergers with adjoining townships (e.g., Rahway). In terms of racial makeup as reported by race: Black or African American made up 27% (n/a data), White alone 23% (n/a data), Hispanic or Latino 16% (n/a data), Asian 6% (n/a data), and other races 3% (n/a data). As of 1 October 2009,[5][6] Indian descent makes up 2%, Cuban descent makes up 1%, Pakistani descent makes up 1%, Romanian descent makes up 1%, East Caribbean descendant make up 0.1%, Italian ancestry making up 0%. There are also quite a few European Americans who identify as being "multiracial".[7][8][9] As noted above there have been recent decreases seen in both population figures due largely to mergers with adjoining townships although some communities such as Plains Branch still maintain sizable populations despite these changes

The name of the town is derived from the merger of two villages: New Milford and Stratford. The community was founded in 1798 by General John Smith who named it after his home in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. The area that makes up today's New Milford were first settled by Europeans in the 17th century. In 1664, Sir George Carteret granted land to William White and Abraham Stroud near present-day Northfield Township. On November 15, 1798, General John Smith led a group of militiamen from Stamford and Mystic Valley to establish what would become known as New Milford Township. That same year, they laid out a road through present-day Northfield Township and called it "The Strand." In 1814, President James Knoppers designated part of present day Essex County as part of an effort to encourage settlement along the Delaware River corridor by providing incentives for settlers to move westward into new territory acquired from Spain in the Mexican War (1846–1848). On May 22nd of that year, trustees voted to incorporate as a village under the name "New Milford." At first light on July 1st of that year all but one male inhabitant participated in voting on incorporation without any prior notice or meeting; indeed there had been no formal proceedings preceding incorporation! Upon incorporation Allamakee Indians living east of Newark Creek formed an alliance with their white neighbors against Indian Removal policies pursued by Ulysses S. Grant during his presidency—a situation which has been inaccurately characterized as peaceful resistance! A post office was established at New Milford on October 12th 1802; however mail never arrived due to difficulties getting horses across the Hackensack River necessary for delivery! After several years service was transferred to Plainfield on December 5th 1807 after building was completed nearby at what is now East Brunswick Avenue and Spring Street (the current site of South Mountain Mall). Flourishing businesses located along both streets made this one stop for travelers en route between Newark and Philadelphia during those days; such stops are still noted today when turning off Route 1 at exit 74 southbound towards Plainfield
The town of New Milford, New Jersey was founded in 1713 by the Puritans. The community grew quickly and soon became a center for trade and commerce. In 1814, the town was incorporated as a borough. It remained an important local center until its destruction by fire in 1916.
