The town was first settled in 1664 by English colonists as part of the Susquehanna Colony. In 1836, it became a part of the Uniontown Township form of government. On November 15th, 1955, it merged with nearby Rahway to form the new city of Rahway. Today, New Milford remains an agricultural and rural community with a mixture of high school students and retirees from surrounding municipalities who are commuters to larger cities such as Newark or Trenton. New Milford was founded in 1764 by English immigrants. The town became a center of trade and culture in the 1800s, thanks to its location near the New York and Philadelphia markets. In 1907, New Milford became an incorporated village. Today, it is a small town with a population of about 6,000 residents. New Milford’s history can be traced back to early colonial days when the area was part of Dutch West India Company territory. The first English settlers arrived in 1764 and began farming the land that now includes parts of New Milford and Woodbridge Township. By 1812, however, most of what is now New Milford had been annexed by Jersey City. During the Revolutionary War, many British soldiers were killed or captured in and around New Milford. One such soldier was General John Burgoyne who was later brought here as punishment for his role in the war. After the war ended, many British veterans moved into what is now New Milford because there were no resettlement opportunities in America at that time. Some of these veterans formed companies called “The Riflemen” which hunted game in central Jersey during deer season. For some time after the war ended, this group helped maintain law and order in Jersey City while their fellows struggled through Reconstructionember 2%. In 1802-3, new commissioners were appointed to manage local affairs within the newly organized township under state authority following the removal of tribal elders from Indian Territory east of Trenton . Under this system – known as “the municipal government model” – township officials developed close relationships with their counterparts on Long Island . This type of government proved successful enough that similar systems were set up throughout much of Pennsylvania , Ohio , Maryland Heights , Philadelphia (and eventually Allentown ) until statehood provided a more centralized formality for civic life across NEW JERSEY In 1847-8 another commission was established to explore ways to improve water supplies for all inhabitants within township limits . That same year saw further consolidation through annexation of neighboring townships including Northumberland County (west) over objections from long timers like George Washington Denny who feared he would lose his share if his home lay within boundaries controlled by someone other than himself
New Milford was founded in 1797 by James Munroe and Curwen Banks. The town was named after New Milford, Connecticut, where Munroe's father had settled in 1768. In 1802, the towns of Easton and Weston were merged into New Milford. In 1838, the towns of Northumberland and Vineland were merged into New Milford. In 1875, the towns of Monmouth Junction and Middletown were merged into New Milford. On October 15, 1907, the Towns of Saybrook and Montville were merged into New Milford as well. On April 12, 1912, the Borough of Perth Amboy was consolidated with New Milford as a result of an act by the state Legislature which designated Perth Amboy as an incorporated borough pursuant to Section 2-A of the Municipal Corporations Law (1910).
