New Milford, New Jersey is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. It is located on the southern edge of the township of West Orange and is within the borough of East Orange. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. New Milford was founded in 1795 by English settlers as part of an effort to establish a new colony on Long Island called Newtown. The town name was chosen because it reminded them of a field they had seen near their original home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The first residents were Presbyterians who arrived from Ulster in Northern Ireland. They built Fancy's Tavern and other early businesses. In 1814, when Morris County was created, New Milford became one of its seven townships. In 1838, the town obtained a charter from Governor Edward Smith to become an incorporated municipality with voting rights for all citizens over 21 years old. The first mayor was John Fenton and the first council included six members: two men from each household and four women. That year also saw the erection of the first public building in town-the Methodist Episcopal Church which still stands today (rebuilt in 1957). In 1860, New Milford became part of the newly formed Unionville Township; however, it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became part of East Orange Borough upon merger with that township. In 1970–71, changes were made to zoning laws which led to growth in commercial areas such as shopping malls and office parks adjacent to schools or close to transportation facilities like highways or airports; this caused concern among some longtime residents about loss of privacy and access to natural surroundings

New Milford is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,609 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "New Milford" is derived from the English word "new town." The first European settlers in what is now New Milford arrived in 1664 as part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. They were led by Hendrick Corstiaensen and Cornelius Zeeland. The first named settler in what is now New Milford was Isaac Norris, who arrived in 1684. He built a log cabin on the east side of Route 202 near present-day Easton Avenue. In 1715, Samuel Morris came to this area and erected a frame house on what is now Northumberland Avenue just south of Route 202. By 1725, all but two families had left for British territory during the Revolutionary War because they felt it would be better to fight for independence than remain under Dutch control. In 1814, following the Mexican Invasion of America, American forces burned down most of Mexico City's old walls andtook over much of that country including Mexico City itself as an American protectorate known as California de Tejas ( Californias en Frontera). In 1821 when President James Ketchum ceded land adjoining modern-day Newark to Mexico as part of that country's effort to rejoin North America through territorial acquisitions subsequent to Santa Fe Treaty (1819), Mexico assigned parcels within present-day New Milford Township to John Pugh and his heirs pursuant to their father's will intestate estate headed by George Washington Pugh who also resided thereabouts at that time; however not until after Government Land Law section 1 (12/1/1920) granted federal government ownership enabling commerce with Canada via US border crossings became legal did any parcel become formally inhabited or developed within today's borders forming our township according to official records – incorporating portions located along both sides of Delaware River prior thereto! On July 10th 1861 Abraham Lincoln ordered Ulysses S Grant while Army Commander at Vicksburg Mississippi military occupation force withdrawn from Mobile Alabama; orders being given also for General Banks Commanding District West Alabama Confederate Forces occupyingMobile Bayous & adjacent interior parts thereof without surrendering said bayous Accordingly on such date I encamped my Headquarters near Franklin Gentry’s plantation hereabout bordered by Your Excellency’s line which extended thence across open Prairie about one half mile wide and three quarters long hereafter so designated & bounded by His lines hereinbefore mentionedalso Call’d Franklin Gentry Plantation belonging originally to Major General Robert E Lee commanding Union army Corps detached from Army Commander thereunder then under My command Genl’s Orders marching thence towards Mobile Bayou you having previously warning me thereof I determined upon encampment hereabout camps being situated about one mile distant from each other watered pussycat swampy ground lying between these Swampy Grounds & Franklins Gentry Plantation containing upwardsof Seventy five thousand eight hundred acres lying straddling said Swampy Grounds extending thence into open Prairie laying athwart your Line where it crossed said Prairie aforesaid You are hereby informed your Commanders Post will be established hereabouts Fort Moultrie & Blue Hill
New Milford was founded in 1724 by a group of settlers from Fishkill, New York. The town was named for the nearby Mount Hope Cemetery. New Milford grew rapidly during the 1800s, thanks to its location on the Susquehanna River and its access to trade routes. The city was known for its many mills and factories, as well as for its agriculture and fishing industry. In 1915, New Milford became part of the Borough of Paramus, which was merged into Township of North Wildwood in 1957.
